can a 3 speed rear axle be used as a jackshaft/transmission? I plan on all right hand side drive system. Was playing with the 3 speed axle and could not work out in my head how to adapt it to suit my needs. Any help?

Drive the rear wheel by fitting a cog on the body of the hub

add a sprocket to the spokes holes on the drive side of the hub to go to the rear wheel.

add a disk to the spoke holes on the left hand side of the hub ?

braking is trickier though as you want NO free wheel between the braked components and the wheel but you do need a free wheel between the pedals and the hub ?

Sturmey Archer make a 3 speed hub for delta style trikes, no brake on it just 22 teeth in and out to the rear axle, it is a simple jackshaft nothing more brakes go on the main axle or rims if you want them to work, if you dont want them to work put a disc on the 3 speed hub it will be 100% effective at doing nothing
:rolleyes4:

I dont want the brakes on the 3 spped to work, just wondered if i leave the parts in? So I weld a sprocket onto the left(where the brakes are lokated) side at the spoke holes/ hub flange, and the right hand/ 3 speed and sprocket side will then drive the rear wheel?

????

If I put a disc on one hub flange and a sprocket on the other hub flange , the sprocket is connected to the rear wheel by chain with NO free wheel on the rear wheel then surely that will act as a brake for the rear wheel ?

Or are you saying I am having a senior moment ?

I don't know if this will help your brain flow. I ended up going electric on this bike but I did take this setup to the pedaling stage in my early prototype stages.
It may not help in the shifting aspect, maybe a 3 speed to a jackshaft?

I wanted to see this as well. Too bad Photobucket messed everything up.
