I have thought about this type of thing a lot. I was wondering if there were some way to get a block & tackle (http://www.howstuffworks.com/pulley.htm) type pulley system to generate a lot of drive at the wheel without a lot of drive from the engine...(me) LOL!

I didn't really understand how it worked until I watched the video. That is neat! Gives you over 2x the leverage of regular cranks. Surely we could whip up something like that. It would be a very fun experiment!

Judging from the price, they're apparently pretty proud of it, anyway.

A couple of years ago, when I first built my quad, I thought about a similar system, because the heavy quad was hard to pedal. Then I ran into the trike you posted. That's what I was trying to achieve, lots of leverage. My first attmpt was before I saw that trike, And it just seemed logical that if you could eliminate the dead spots of pedaling, It would be easier to pedal without gearing super low. Even after I saw the Sherer site, I knew it was too complicated for me. I ended up with two wheel drive to help get up hills, and that worked out well. With two wheels pushing the quad, it made hill climbing much easier. The problem was making turns, without the inside wheel being able to freewheel while applying power to the pedals. So I put multi speedfreewheels on each wheel, and put the inside wheel in a lower gear when turning uphill. On the flats or downhill, there was no problem, because being able to coast in those situations, the inside wheel will automatically go slower than the outside wheel.
