Actually, you're supposed to put your foot on the bender, but either of these methods will work...

Dont even mess with the two handel type un less you are bending 1/2 or smaller. I made that mistake already.

Brad...with such a long handle, have you ever broken a bender?
It seems like a lot of force on the tip of the bender.

they make pre-made 90 degree bends. rather handy if you dont want to buy yet another tool.

not that i'm against buying more tools, but my wallet is.

Nope, never broke one. I often have to "hang" from that long pole to get a bend going as I am only 160 pounds!

You can also put the bender handle upright in your vise and then pull the pipe with your hands to bend it. I find that sometimes give more control and I can put all my weight on the pipe if need be.

can you bend sqaure tubing the same way?

Yes you can but you have to make the bender yourself (there aren't any commercially available that I know of).

I'll see if I can find the link

can you bend sqaure tubing the same way?
Yes, if you make a mandrel to fit the square tube.
Try a cylinder of the radius you want with two steel flat side cheeks (bolted to the cylinder) so the sides cannot spread. The radius usually is not a tight bend.

Savarin,

That gingery bender looks easy to make, I'll have to put my braininto gear tonight, and see if I can't come up with some plans I can post as a .pdf for you folks. The flat bar is available to me at the plant (I have some friends who owna synthetic crude processing plant) and so is the shop. It'll take a few days to perfect, but maybe this weekend I can see about using a bottle jack or a floor jack to make a homebrew bender.

LOL I avoided the problem and miter cut all my tubing, gave my chop a nice evil angular look.

packing the conduit with dry sand and plugging the ends helps stop the tube collapsing. I also believe you can get a gadget like a long spiral spring to put inside the tube for the same purpose.

but use very very strong "rope/wire/what have you" to pull the spring back out.
Its a real bugger when the rope breaks.
