These are some motors I own and have tested.
Scott 2.5HP for the small EV or fast E-Bike....

I used this on Sparky and a few robots.
PMG 132 for the mid sized EV or E-Motorcycle....
http://www.enigmaindustries.com/PMG_132/PMG_132.htm
I am going to use this on my next E-Bike, The E-Racer. This motor is about as good as it gets for that kind of power.
A similar motor to the PMG132 is this one....
http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_etek.html
The Etek is not as efficient, but comes close.
For a controller that will run all of these motors without frying on the first hill, the Alltrax is great...

For a decent source of hub motors and info...
http://www.ebikes.ca/
I have also tried various discount "coffee can" motors often available on EBay, but would not recommend any of them. I guess for 50 bucks, you can certainly use them for prototyping small e-bikes, but don't expect the 500 watt rating to be anything close to a quality motor or hubmotor that can put out a real 500 watts.

All posted links were found by entering the motor type into Google. I posted only the first link, and have no connection to any of the sites. There are usually 10 or more suppliers for all of these parts, so shop around for the best price.
