We decided to temporarily lift our Cineplex Entertainment/Famous Players embargo to see Rambo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462499) recently. We were pleasantly impressed. Sly's pretty amazing. Lots of gore (very graphic and disturbing) and special effects. If you're a Rambo fan, then this one is for you!

We also rented Impostor (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0160399/plotsummary) the other day - Gary Sinise (CSI New York), Madeleine Stowe, Tony Shalhoub, Vincent D'Onofrio, Mekhi Phifer. Very good, lots of twists and turns. Keeps you guessing right until the end.

One of my favorites lately is Grindhouse - two B movies and trailers done in the style of the old double features. The movies are available on video separately - Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" , a tribute to the great car chase flicks, and Robert Rodriguez' "Planet Terror", a zombie tribute flick. This one features a girl with a machine gun leg! How cool is that?

About as cool as the bad guy with the machine gun leg in "Darkman"...
Not a big fan of Rodriguez' work... I thought Tarantino was going ahead just FINE in "From Dusk Til Dawn", until Rodriguez took over and turned it into a zombie/vampire slasher movie... I couldn't watch it when it switched over, I thought it was absolutely ludicrous.
Best movie I've seen recently is an old classic... Wargames. Borrowed it from the library, but may wind up buying it. Has a lot of truths about relationship and the role of the gub'mint in our lives that should be reviewed from time to time.

I just saw "No Country for Old Men". I want 2 hours of my life back. This thing is nominated for best picture for some reason that I can't fathom. It boils down to "Psycho guy kills everybody to get his money back." I guess I aint educated enuff to unnerstand it.

For Valentine's Day, the wife and I borrowed two sure-fire movies from the library: Random Harvest (an old B/W flick recommended by a columnist at a local paper), and Rob Roy with Liam Neeson. Both fantastically romantic, although the wife finds the latter a little more violent than it needed to be.

Nice choice for Valentines day, Rob Roy! It's got your romantic side but loaded with plenty of guy action! Ya got your cake and eat it too!

TRANSFORMERS... what a waste. I didn't rent it, my sister did. I knew better.
As I figured, though. Too hokey. I couldn't even finish it...

Inspired by real events of WWII. Directed by John Woo.

Anything with Gene Hackman is worth watching.

Re: Heist- Anything with a David Mamet script is usually worth watching- especially if it also involves his actress/singer wife (Rebecca Pidgeon)- see also one of my faves, "State and Main". It's the story of a movie company trying to film in a small New England town. Lots of good performances- Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Julia Stiles, etc.

Since I don't rent videos & can't afford to go see flix at the cinema (nor would I want to go alone anyway), I have to wait for everything to come to Starz, which is the same time it's released on video. So...
Finally got to see Deathproof. Bit of a disappointment to me. For starters, the language was exceptionally vulgar! Mainly though, it was the fact that even though I like Kurt Russell in anything, & the action scenes were great, you have to wade through far too much drama to get to them.
Basically, it was like this: a whole bunch of drama, then a little action. Then, the exact same thing again: a whole bunch of protracted drama, & a little more action at the end. Movie over.

Saw this a couple of weeks ago. Seemed to take quite awhile to get my interest, but looking back, it was a pretty good movie and story. Based on a true story. Denzel Washinton and Russell Crowe were great as usual. Quite different from the usual Godfather and mob type flicks, but I probably would have fallen asleep in the theatre. I just didn't get what was going on for the first half hour. Maybe I was too tired that night to pay close attention.

We saw this on DVD recently. Don't understand how it could be nominated for any awards, but interesting plot. The ending ticked me off, though. Glad we didn't see it in the theatre.
