It's been a while, but I'm finally back. This is something we talked about back then, and I can now report:
Over the years, many -- or at least some -- of us have been looking for freewheels that are stronger than the bicycle kind. For multi-person machines, Kinetic Racers, etc. Well, I have found one. It weighs six pounds and costs $167,-, but we will never break it -- it is rated for 75 HorsePower on a farm tractor or industrial engine. It fits a 1 ¼ inch shaft with standard 1/4 inch key. A local machine shop can make a sleeve/bushing/adapter to install it on a smaller shaft.
It comes from a firm named Hub City and can be seen in their on-line catalog. (I lost the link -- just google it.) Part number is 0331-00600.
The guts of the thing are similar to the agricultural six-spline PTO overrunning adapters that are available at Tractor Supply Co for half the price. Believe me, I have tried to use one of those. And failed. But this Hub City part already has a flange on it for the sprocket, and the shaft goes thru, and it fits on a normal industrial shaft!
Here are two photos -- assembled and apart. I painted the housing brown and the hub white (may look pale blue in picture).
