Thanks for posting this, I like to shift on the front much more than on the back. I tend to leave the back of the bike in 3rd or 4th and do most my shifting with the front. I wouldn't have thought about soldering the cage to change the length, mine is just barely long enough for my current setup. I can see with a change of chain rings I might need to do this mod.

You're welcome ggriff.
I have the same problem and the chain rubs the deraileur so I'll be doing the mod for sure. Don't know where to get the solder flux specified so I guess I'll just clean off the plating where I want to solder.

You could weld the metal as well. I have done this using the 3/32 6013 rod at about 40 amps.
A 1/16 rod would be much easier though.

Most of the fluxes used for stained glass will probably work. I soldered chrome and stainless steel on some of my stained glass projects. It's a worldwide hobby, so if there's a stained glass supply store in your area, they may be of assistance.

This is the easiest way imho to get LOW gears. The link that John gave is the "how to" site to get the needed travel mods for the front derailer. I have done this set up for three Wolfs with quad front chainrings of 18-30-42-52. I can climb trees with this set up. I used "Stay Bright" solder and flux. Works. Here is a link for it: http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=80822
If you have any Q's about the setup, let me know.

Yes I was looking at widening the range to solve problem on a 3 ring. Now you've got me thinking for the wolf. That extra 18 ring would be great. How do you get on for the rear deraileur taking up the chain slack?
Thanks for that information.

The combination of a long cage rear derailer with a Surly Singelator chain tensioner seems to do the trick. The chain is still a bit slack at times but it works without problems and as long as I'm riding the trike I don't see it and don't care.

Thanks OMO. Think I'll give it a try as soon as I can order the necessary mount. Guess I can get a suitable gear from an old cluster. Thats if the splines on the adapter are the same.

Mountaintamer.com sells the 18T sprockets for $5.95. Here's the URL: http://www.abundantadventures.com/quads.html#CHAINRINGS
Hope this helps

Thanks. I saw that earlier. Pity they dont have any 16 t left. That would be a serious low. Also good to know about the Surley chain management device.
