View Full Version : AXLE Cold Roll or not?

I believe I read that Cold Roll 5/8 was what I needed for the axle.
However, now that we have read the plans, it says mild steel.
Is this the same thing? Do I need to return the Cold Roll?
The comment about the CR was that it would be straighter.
Brads comment was that harder steel would be more likely to crack.
Please, I need an answer.
Thank you,
Grant

I found this on the archived forum, under Support: DeltaWolf Trike then Axle steel http://www.lucidscience.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=713&whichpage=1 (http://www.lucidscience.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=713&whichpage=1)

I'm not familiar with other standards the following notes are based on AISI designations
AISI 1018 or 1020 are common round stock sizes and are considered "low carbon" . They are usually hot rolled so don't have as good dimensional tolerances as cold rolled steel but with the setscrew and inner race this should not be a problem for DW bearings. They have good weldability
AISI 1045 is considered "medium carbon" . It is perhaps a more common shafting material than 1018 or 1020 and is available in cold rolled which has better dimensional tolerances and higher hardness. It is weldable but from what I read on the net it can be tricky because it can become brittle in the heat affected zone of the weld depending on cooling after the weld
In my opinion 1018 or 1020 is the preferred steel for the application.
Unfortunately for me I asked at the local power transmission dealer and he couldn't answer what AISI grade of shafting he sold me.

Thanks, good info. I always tell my supplier that the shaft will be welded and under minimal stress

Also a search for the “word “axle in the DW support section of the archived forum yields 4 pages with the word axle highlighted in yellow. Some good stuff there. I hope this helps

Ps cold rolled steel seemed to be the consensus.

Use the cold rolled steel. Cold rolled is truer, and is used for axles, motor shafts, etc.

I bought hot rolled and had to fake my shopsmith into a sort of metal sander. Then had to spin the rod to get it even and round so it would slide through the DW's bearings while bolted to the frame.
Cold rooled would of been - no problem. Don't know the cost difference but it's worth it.

The only 5/8" my local HD had appeared to be hot roll.
At least the CR I bought was clean. The HD 5/8 was filthy, oily etc.
