I tried with the wheel together...tried with the wheel apart...just can't get this thing apart...any ideas? Re-lace the wheel and try again? I need a bigger bolt...

Jim, I use a 3' section of pipe slipped over my wrench as a 'cheater' to get my tuff ones off.
Hope this helps.

I use one of these with a 1/2" breaker bar, or a pipe wrench with a length of pipe as a persuader, as Dan suggests. I only had to use the pipe wrench twice.

at a bike shop i saw the guys put the freewheel tool into a vice, then put the tire over the tool. then turned the tire.

worked great. but i suggest having a good vice when you try this- i broke mine attempting it. :(

So by all accounts looks like I'll be re-lacing the wheel and then trying again...

Following Brad's lead, I built one his freewheel removal tools, back when I first started in this crazy hobby.

Built mine with a 14" long, 1" square tube handle, which may not be the most ergonomic or aesthetically appealling,
but it made for easy drilling & construction.

Used a hardened bolt which won't strip or round off. The bolt head is 13/16, a perfect fit. In fact, I usually have to tap it in.
Drilled a couple of holes in the handle for hanging, & VOILA, an indispensible & practically indestructible tool!

In true Atomic Zombie overbuild tradition, I welded a nut to the back side, & welded the bolt to the nut & handle both,
for a little added reinforcement.

A couple of licks with a hammer, & even the most stubborn freewheels pop loose every time, easy as pie!

Jim, just a reminder, don't buy a 13/16 bolt. Buy one with a 13/16 HEAD, which fits the freewheel socket perfectly. :)

That would be a 9/16" or possibly a large head 1/2" bolt. A 14mm bolt may also work.

Yes, thanks Joey. I got one that size and it's way too big. Tired of fighting it so I just hammered apart the hub, ground off the spokes, and welded that baby right on the axle! See the Baby Wolf (http://forum.atomiczombie.com/showthread.php?t=1118)thread for updates...
