View Full Version : Gearing Components
hi guys!
i got a "problem"
i collected a whole bunch of components (Shimano)
but i do not know the "building year" nor if they are compatible with each other!
can you help me sorting out the stuff and which components i can combine?
i would upload images of all the components i got and you tell me...
local shop want 20 euro for telling me (as it takes time to look the stuff up in the catalog - the same guy told me it takes him half a day to spoke one wheel - ripp off? :p)
so guys, as i know you know what you do - i hope that you are willed to help me out!

Instead of pix, it would be more helpful i think to just list the components by name. That would help me at least nail down spec for you. The intricacies of what goes with what is one of the learning processes we all go through.
20 Euros for knowledge out his head and 1/2 day to spoke a wheel??? RIPOFF!!!

Woa - the dude must take a 7 hour lunch break! The first wheels I ever built were on my DeltaWolf (took 2 hours), and after this many years they are still running true.
I think you best be finding another bike shop!

We are always glad to help when we can, but you may find a lot of what you want to know about what fits what at Sheldon Browns site on drive trains

I did some shopping around for my bike shop and there are a bunch in my area.
First one wanted $75 per wheel to lace and true, I supply everything. And another bike shop, looked at the axle with the home made hub, and just said they couldn't do anything with it. Another Korean one, gave me some bad advice and sold me spokes (wrong length). In the end I used the info online and laced the thing myself. Took me a lot of tries to get the valve hole in the right place on the spokes, they looked good but just not perfect and lacing should be perfect,, but after the first one, the next one took less than an hour. For me truing the wheel was a lot easier than lacing it. I used the info from Sheldon's website for about everything. If you run into a shop that uses a machine to true wheels I'd say find another one, its better done by hand and without the 7 hour lunch break LOL.

Myfirst wheel took 3 tries to get it right.
For some strange reason I had miscounted the holes in the hub to the holes in the rim and just couldnt get the pattern to work out:eek::eek:
A real senior moment.:D

I know that routine. Did the skipped or missed hole thing a few times, and you only realize it on the last spoke for that side. Ooops.

I bought the book from this site. Very good. I also used Sheldon Brown.
The spoke length calculator on the site works well too.

@OMO
well the problem is i cant tell you the age of the components.
and the main problem is that there are components XT/LX which were produced with 7/8/9 gears. and those changed over the years (also the chain changed every x years.)
i hope i can type the things togeter (and take photos)
this weekend.
i am bit stressed as i am awaiting my daugter to be born next tuesday ;)

LUMO, CONGRATS.
now thats over, put down the welder back away from the tool bench, we admire your dedication. But right now you are about to have a Little zombe crew member to greet into the world and watchover, and if you dont take care of your signifagant other she may take care of you (hormones can make a pregnant woman the incredable hulk one munite, and a cuddle puppy the next, but im sure you know that)
I think right now is the time to take care of your family. I think the rest of the forum will understand., I know I will.
thanks guys!
probably i'll post photos of my first well done AND finished project called JOLINA :D

You are just getting started on the biggest project of your life -- raising your daughter. You have my sincerist and heartfelt best wishes because, unlike Brad's creations, yours goes not come with an instruction manual!!!

Have you noticed that what is probably the most important and demanding job you will ever undertake in your life you receive no training for?
Congrats and best wishes to all three.
