Yesterday's speed test was the first. The result was about 29 mph on the level.

Today was the first real range test, starting with fully charged batts. I'm gonna wait a day or two before posting the results, & give anyone interested, a chance to guess the results, based on the specs, & parameters of the test:

First, weight & power specs. The Bully is right at 200 lbs. Although I haven't weighed it, the batts weigh 37 lbs each, that's 148. I DID weigh the motor, it's 20 lbs. That makes 168. I'm sure that the tire, tube, controller, plywood, cargo box & trailer frame total at least 32 more, so 200 should be pretty accurate.

My weight is 175. Estimated trike weight is 40, so total rolling weight should be around 415 lbs!

Power-wise, she's runnin' on four, 50 amp-hour batts.

Second, the test itself. Except for about 8 or 10 all-out sprints (outrunning dogs, screaming down hills, & showing off a couple of times ), I tried to keep the speed at a constant 15 mph at all times, even when climbing hills. I did absolutely no pedaling whatsover, not even on the hill climbs, making the batts do ALL of the work, constantly maintaining the 15 mph nominal speed, for the entire test.

After the few stops I had to make, or after slowing a bit for a corner, all accelerations were gentle & gradual, no hard accelerations, except for those "8 or 10 all-out sprints".

I rode it like this until the low power light started coming on, then made it the remaining 1.5 miles home, still strictly on battery power alone.

NOW, guess what the odometer read when the low power light first came on! :thinking2:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Gentlemen, place your bets!

Strickly based on the length of time you were off the board.... I'd guess 62.3 miles...
How big were the dogs?.............:rolleyes4:

If pavement and mainly flat was your terrain.... 48 Miles.
If dirt and mainly flat was your terrain.... 40 Miles.
If you had more hills and more dirt spinning fun... 34 Miles.

If there were quite a few hills, subtract 5 miles.

Those are my bets.

Okay, I should clarify the terrain...

Mostly flat, a few slight grades here & there, & a couple of fairly steep (but short) ones,
one of which required full-throttle for about 30 seconds, to barely maintain the 15 mph nominal speed.

Oh, & all pavement, BTW.

Don't go by that, Larry. That's all I can say...
Medium size dogs, no match for a Phoenix Racer! :punk:

Ok, reworking the numbers for few hills and pavement and more conservative use of G-Force... 59 miles.

After your 4th battery charge, this will increase by about 10%

My estimation after a bit of head scratching is 52 miles rounded.

What was the results? :taz:Nah, you ain't missed anything. I'm just waiting till after the holdiay weekend,
in case anybody else wanted a chance to hazard a guess.
I'll post it tomorrow... :)

What, no more takers? Nobody else brave enough to hazard a guess?
Well, I must've done a pretty fair job of holdin' her on a steady 15 mph,
cuz the 'puter shows an average of 15.1, obviously cuz of those "8 or 10 all-out sprints".

Okay, here's the lowdown... This is what it showed when I rolled into the yard,
but the light had started coming on just over a mile previous, at 45 miles.
Looks like everybody guessed a little high...

I was really hoping to see the 50 mile mark, but this is still not bad
for roughly a 415 lb load at 15 mph, with absolutely no pedalling.
I'd prolly have made it, if not for those few sprints!

Brad, you shouldn't have second guessed yourself, cuz you originally had it NAILED, bro:If pavement and mainly flat was your terrain.... 48 Miles.

Also, I set a new record for top speed! This was INTENSE!!!

"Gee Scoob, that's prolly the world speed record for a SpinCycle!" :punk:

Wahoo Joey,

37.6 mph. Boy thats hammerin'.

If Brad's right about the 10% improvement after a few charges then you'll crack the fifty miles. Probably do it easy If you don't keep making like a formula one driver. :jester:

Question now is. If you had smaller lighter batteries so you would have less load, would you get just as far?

Need the price of the Li batteries to fall. Twice the charge for half the weight.

I forgot to ask...

Was your kit designed for 48 volts? If not, the indicator readings are bogus. I run my 36v system at 48v and the yellow light is always wrong.

If you really want cutting edge battery monitoring...

These will be installed on all new electric projects of mine next year.

Yeah, it's all designed to be 48 volts, throttle & all.

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/8175/thumbthrottlesb8.jpg

The only change I made to the kit was to substitute bigger batts, & upgrade to the Soneil charger.
Besides, as soon as the low light came on, the motor slowed down.

Prolly so, John, within reason.
Yep, twice the charge & half the weight! That's what I'M waitin' for! :punk:

I haven't gotten to ride it a single time since. It's been cold & rainy! :(
The next test will be at full speed all the way, though!
I figure that'll prolly cut the range in half, eh?
