View Full Version : I Wonder...

One of the few things remaining to be done to complete my LR, is to mount the computer.
As it turns out, the spokes on the hub motor are so massive, I can't mount the magnet on them.
My solution will be to drill a small hole in the edge of the hub flange, to fascillitate mounting the magnet directly to the flange.

I've checked flange-mounted magnet/fork clearance, & don't see any real problem with this aspect of it,
but I'm wondering if the magnetic field generated by the spinning hub motor will interfere with my computer.

Has anyone else tried this, feeding the computer from a hub-motor wheel? :thinking2:

Joey why not just mount it to one of the rear wheels or is the problem not enough cord to reach that far?

Oh, & I KNEW that question was coming, BTW! :laugh3:

Ok Joey next question I am assuming the magnets have a groove in the back of them that fits around the spoke could you take a file and make that groove larger so that they would fit around the spokes . That still leaves the issue of the motor possibly messing with the computer though .

Ok Joey next question I am assuming the magnets have a groove in the back of them that fits around the spoke could you take a file and make that groove larger so that they would fit around the spokes . That still leaves the issue of the motor possibly messing with the computer though .On mine, the magnet is mounted in a metal casing, with split,
internal threads in the back. If I try widening the groove by THAT much,
there won't be much left of the internal threads that the mounting screw goes in.

Anyway, that's not really that much of an issue. Like I said, I can drill a small hole through the
edge of the hub flange, & put the mounting screw through the hole, from the back,
to hold the magnet in place. Mainly, I'm just wondering about magnetic fields.

Besides, I wanna mount the puter up front, nice & tidy, kinda like I did on the Kroozer,
without unsightly wires running all over the place:

I'd rather wrap the wire around the fork a million times :rolleyes4:, than run it along the frame & up the steer.
Yeah, I know... I'm kind of a weenie when it comes to wires & cables.

...and before you ask, it's cuz I'm too cheap to spring for a nice, wireless!

SJ - I don't know for sure, but since all the coils and the magnets are inside an aluminum housing (the hub), I would think the hub may act like a nice Faraday cage that will keep in any stray magnetic fields inside. One way to test it would be with one of those little toy compasses. Just set it horizontally near where you intend to put the wheel magnet sensor and slowly rotate the wheel. If the compass needle swings with the rotation, you will know you have a magnetic field. If you can't find a toy compass, magnetize a sewing needle and float it on a cork in a cup of water.

Even if there is a field there, it may not be strong enough to trigger the sensor. I know on my bike computers if you move the sensor much more than about 1/8" away they don't trigger.

I was hoping maybe someone else had already tried this, & could tell me for sure,
before I drill a hole in my hub motor flange & most likely void the warranty,
even though the hole will be tiny, only looking like an extra spoke hole.

Good idea about the compass, though. I have a good one, so I'll give that a shot when the weather breaks.

so I really don't anticipate a problem, thanx!

Joey sorry I disapeared there lost internet I just love ice storms :D. I would think you would be ok if the compass checks out . I would try the compass with the hub motor actually running though just to be sure.

Ya know ya could always drill a couple holes and run the dang cable through the frame :P.

You could also probably just epoxy the magnet to the hub flange, rather than drilling it. That way if it doesn't work you can probably still break it off and clean it up like new.

Ya know ya could always drill a couple holes and run the dang cable through the frame :P.Not unless I wanna cut off the pickup sensor,
& then splice the wire back together. :P

Wake up & smell the pizza, dude! :jester:

Not unless I wanna cut off the pickup sensor,
& then splice the wire back together. That worked for me. I did that on my DW and hid the splice so it's not seen. I needed a longer run from the pickup to the 'computer', so I added a few feet of wire. Very easy.

Actually, I really did figure it would ruin it to cut the wire & try to splice it back together,
but as I've said many times, I really don't know electrical stuff... :dunce2:

Joey I splice wires everyday :D. I would have helped ya just like I am helpin Moe :D:D:D.Granted I would have done it from my nice warm heated garage but its the thought that counts.

That's why I said "wake up & smell the pizza".

Joey Honestly I didnt know the sensor was attatched to the end of the wire :D. I figured you attatched the sensor after the wire was run but still as rR says no big deal if you cut it just cut it far enough back that you have wire left to splice to :D.

There was also a time when you couldn't read or ride a bike or weld, but you're doing those things with no problem. And splicing 2 wires isn't really 'electrical stuff'.

Get on it, dude and give it a try. A cheap soldering kit is all you need...

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062758&y=8&x=13&retainProdsInSession=1

The rest you already have (cutters & tape). Practice on a couple of pieces of scrap wire (just the way you learned to weld) and you're ready to go.

Once you've done it, you'll have another new skill to put in that giant tool belt...!! :cheesy:

Go for it...!!

Joey while your at radio shack go ahead and get some heatshrink tubing so we can splice it back together right walk away from the tape slowly :D:D.

I'm gonna leave the 'puter where it is. Went ahead & drilled the flange,
& mounted the magnet that way. It works fine...

Didn't get much else done, but at least I got the 'puter workin'.
