I am looking for a trailer and I want to make sure it will take a DW.
So DW builders...just how long is this torpedo trike?
Note: front edge to back edge not axle to axle.
Thanks,

My DW is 90 inches total length, with a 68.5 inch track.

Depending on how much you want to carry, you might consider using Sir Joey's and others ideas of a rear platform off the DW itself. I am incorporating a rack that extends 1/2 inch past the rear wheels -- this will also make a rudimentary bumper. The big advantage of doing this is that you no longer need to deal with any trailer. No dealing with strange tire/tubes and weight distribution issues. My platform will be 16 by 23.5 inches. I am also designing panniers that will be able to be securely hung off the back of the rack for even more storage space if needed. I plan to ride my DW across the US from VA to Oregon the summer of 09 and will use the platform as my storage area. Hope this helps.

P.S. I will measure one of my DW's and post it's length when I get home tonight

I think the trailer vegan777 was refering to is one that attaches to your car/SUV/pick-up truck/etc. to haul the DW from point A to point B.

Vegan,
Using 24" rear wheels & a 46" boom tube, mine ended up being 7', 7", tip to tip. Bear in mind, wheel size AND boom tube length will determine your overall length.
You'll definitely need an 8' trailer, though.

I am using 700C rims and tires in the back. My DW is 92 inches or 7 feet 8 inches in length. That does not include a "luggage rack" that is going to go on the back of the next three a la Sir Joey's excellent DW. BTW my hat's off to you Sir Joey.

That's most decent of you, Odd Man, thanx!
For me, the luggage rack was a no-brainer, however, I can't take credit for it, as I copied the idea from another DW in the builder's gallery.
I did build mine slightly differently though, a little lower, & with a "recessed" cargo area, so stuff wouldn't slide off, if I ever used it to carry anything other than the rack trunks (which also fit neatly inside the angle-iron framework). I also built it specifically to fit the 2 rack trunks placed end-to-end. The 12" x 24" inside dimensions of the rack worked perfectly, cuz I built the trike frame 26" wide.
The only drawback is that I can't really use the little outside pouch on the ends of the trunks, as they're too close to the wheels. In fact, I had to kinda fold 'em in, to make sure they wouldn't rub, & so far, it's worked fine.
Can't wait to see how you do yours! BTW, you mentioned "next" 3! Wow, you're planning on doing some SERIOUS hacking, eh? Which ones are yours in the gallery, anyway? I know you have some stuff in there, cuz you've been a member here for nearly a year longer than me! :)

Sir Joey
I can shamefully admit to having nothing in the gallery. I am a stealth builder and even more shamefully, do not hack (please don't ban me Brad and Kat!!!). I use all new components for my builds. Does this make me a rebel within rebels or a shameful traitor to the cause???
Another reason I don't post to the gallery is that I don't think my work is "worthy" enough...

Hey, nothing wrong with using new stuff, I do it myself to some extent, but I'm not buying that "not worthy" crap! heh-heh

There's any number of reasons for using new parts. In the end, you still have a bike that you built, with customizations to fit your needs.

Hi, 'vegan'....My DW is 88-inches from 'Stem to Stern' and easily fits in my Chrysler mini-van with the third seat removed.
You can buy trailer frame kits which come with a bare-bones frame, wheels and suspension for around $200. Make a wooden box for it and you can haul several bikes.
