I hope all of you, your family and friends in Oz are well and not harmed by the wild fire.

I second that. Seen some video footage of the fires - very devastating. Be safe.

Yes it is all pretty horrendous. The news reports at least 134 known dead and 5000 homeless. The fire advance was so sudden and unexpected they didn't stand a chance.
I believe it is the worst natural disaster in Australia in living memory. To add insult to injury it seems arsonists were probably to blame. Whole towns have been all but obliterated.
I'm on the other side of the continent but it could easily happen here too. We had a fire just a couple of years back caused by a pole top fire that took life. It is forecast hot and windy here later this week and we need to be on guard. Water bombers extinguished a blaze just a couple of kilometers from me last Sunday.
My thoughts are with the emergency service personell and the survivors They will need lots of help. An appeal started in WA yesterday has reached the $! million mark and necessities are being flown across.
Nature is fickle! The fires in Victoria and at the same time floods in Queensland, Savarins part of the world. Almost unbelievable.

There are some miracles being reported despite the devastation:

Yep, I'm fine, just damp.
We got two days where we saw the sun for a while but the heavens totally opened this evening, huge thunder storm.
Couldnt hear the tv from the noise of the rain on the roof and the frogs outside.
At least we can shelter from the rain.
I believe the arsonist theory is a cover.
How do they know?
The greenies and gov budget cuts have been the most to blame, no back burning, far too much fuel laying around, most fire trails unmaintained, housing planning allowed in high danger unsuitable areas, all
exacerbated by the high temps.
Australia was shaped by fire, a lot of native trees cannot seed without having been through a fire.
A lot of these natural fires have been stamped out allowing the under brush fuel to build up to alarming proportions.
More money needs to be spent on controlled burning to lessen this risk.
The last two commissions made the same recommendations but over time the lessons were forgotten or ignored.
I expect the commission will make the same recommendations this time as well.
Fire crews had to hack their way through overgrown fire trails and could get the fires to attempt to control them.
Those guys are real heroes.
Sorry for the rant.
