Wow, deja vu! Didn't we just do this? :D I know, that was on the old forum. Shouting at ya from Roiling Mudholes. Hey MadMike, where are ya?

Oh, to continue a thought from the other thread- I met up with the guy from AH, he's pretty cool. A scrounger, but he's more into ratbikes and "guerrilla bike design" than function. A lot of tallbikes and choppers made from slapping this and that together with booger welds. He'd heard of us here at AZ, but thought the whole thing too pretentious! I mean, come on- SELLING plans? Where's the love, freedom of information, crap like that? LOL!

Anyway, we're known, perhaps not too highly rated by those with the shallow pockets (or minds). This guy might be up to meeting in the springtime.

I noted you're right over in Des Plaines... I'm in Rolling Meadows, about 15-20 minutes west of you, a couple blocks south of the Arlington Racetrack. As a matter of fact, I just made an e-contact for parts through Craigslist, he's in Arlington Heights and has a tallbike he built!

Once the weather gets better, we ought to find a reasonably central place to meet, show off our skills with our respective rides and shoot some BS. I would have contacted you via your profile, but you seem to have no mailbox, and had no email address listed.

Posted - 01/25/2008 : 02:10:32 Hey neighbor!!

I might want to talk to you in a few weeks about some welding if you're interested in helping me out (well after the Super Bowl). I want to build a DW. I own a welder, but do not know how to use it, and also do not have a safe place to use it either. I think I know where Village Cycle is located, not very far from my home.Edited by - Pagan Wizard on 01/25/2008 02:12:36

It's a Danley built unit dating back to the 60's, which means 24"OC studs, no footings or rebar in the flat-slab concrete floor (so the whole garage is slowly sinking into the dirt while the slab cracks), clapboard siding over tarpaper (both quite rotten), etc. IOW, it's a drafty old barn, but it keeps my tools out of the elements (mostly)!

On the good side, I have lights, compressed air, and a 240V outlet, and am slowly making my way to having more room in there. Three motorcycles, two woodstoves (one connected for heat), an electric kiln, a disassembled table saw, and a diesel engine with trans and transfer case all vie for floor space with whatever else I'm working on!

I have 15A capacity to the outlets, so you can bring your welder here to try it out. If you don't care about the Stupor Bowl (as I obviously don't... I must be some kind of heretic!), we can set up any time to get together.

Cool! Extreme Machinist meeting going on!

Posted - 01/25/2008 : 13:56:18 Actually I am a huge football fan and have a party set at my home for the big game. I wasn't thinking about starting the build until it starts to warm up outside a little bit. As for my welding skills, they don't even exist in dreams. I have never even attempted to learn how to weld. A friend of mine told me that he knew how to weld and could show me how, but after I bought my welder, he told me that he hadn't welded in over 20 years and really didn't remember how to weld. So now I have a $250 paper weight and a mask and a few pairs of gloves for additional decorations. Having said all that, I am probably looking to employ your welding skills after the weather warms up a bit.Edited by - Pagan Wizard on 01/26/2008 02:25:43

I've welded more recently than 20 years ago (I think my last project was my welding table that I built last November), but the last time I actually took a course on it was back in '94 or so. Since then, I've welded with my buddy's Lincoln MIG-PAK 140, my father's Millermatic 200 (what a machine!), and my Century AC/DC stick welder. Most of that was on structural stuff, the most entertaining of which was welding rigid DOM struts onto a friend's motorcycle to turn an ordinary Suzuki GS-400 into a bada$$ barhopping hardtail.

In the meantime, I'll try to brush up on the basics myself. You can do the same by perusing the big name websites: Miller, Hobart, Lincoln, etc. All of them have some sort of welding tutorial on their sites, which will familiarize you with the equipment and the basic methods. By the time the weather warms up enough to not risk life and limb in my breezy shack, we'll both be ready and rarin to go.

Picked up a Schwinn 20" BMX of some sort this morning on the way to work... pays to keep an eye on the curb while driving! I may be able to use the BB and fork for my Bandito! W00t!

"All General Membership Meetings are Held at Recreation Park Field House at 7:30 p.m. the fourth Wednesday each month except in June, July, August, November, and December."

So the last one was on the 30th, just missed it. Next one's on the 27th, I'm going to be there, I might even 2-wheel it.

I think he (and others like him) is just jealous that he didn't think to do this before AZ thought of it. :D

I don't know about that... he's just a guy with little means, who loves the concept of building bikes, and doesn't think it should be held proprietary. Must not believe in the concept of 'intellectual rights', either, so I'm betting his iPod is just chock full of bootlegs and pirate rips... In any case, he's up for building some wacky creations, so he should fit right in.

He's a member of the Chicago chapter of the Rat Patrol kamikaze bike builders, if that gives you any indication of his bent. He rode his tallbike over here on Tuesday... YES, during that snowstorm. That ALSO gives you an idea of his bent. ;) He doesn't own more than a few hand tools, so wanted to borrow the use of my angle grinder to work on his frame. He did his welding at the Rat Patrol's shop down in the city, and would train in to the city from Wilmette after he'd ridden there (carrying the tallbike bits or frame) on his back. Had to schmooze the conductors to let him carry the thing on the train, but won out every time.

He worked on it in my garage and we shot the bull for a little bit, and then I saw him off. Watching someone free-mount a tallbike is quite interesting! Wobbling down the street through the growing slush, he hooted and rang his bell... I called him crazy, and meant it. He seems a good fellow, though, and is up to getting together with us local AZ'ers quite regardless of weather (obviously), perhaps meet at a pub and sprout some ideas over some fermented barley. ;)

Today is V-day, and so I have plans to spend it with the wife; I hope, however, to get into the garage this weekend to do some cleaning. I've reduced a 1.5-car garage to an L-shaped walkway- from the small door to the workbenches, and from there to the wood stove. Not exactly conducive to building! If I can get the snowthrowers running, I'll set em outside under a tarp and have that much more room.

I trust you understood that when I said "jealous" I was only joking, right?? BTW, you might want to make sure your snow blower is running properly BEFORE the weekend..........we are due to get blasted with a huge snow storm Sunday & Monday. As for getting together before starting any builds (yours or mine), that sounds like a good idea, altho I rarely consume alcholic beverages anymore......guess they really don't do for me what they used to anymore. I already own DW plans and with you being willing to help me get started, and possibly provide a safe place for me to weld, I would be more than happy to share my plans with you.
