View Full Version : Master Links An Endangered Species?

I normally buy master links at Wally World. Lately, I've been checking the bike dept every time I'm in town, but I've been striking out.
Well, after 2 solid months, I decided they must've quit carrying them for some strange reason, gave up & stopped by our
LBS to pick some up. The guy checked his store room, said he was all out, but he'd order some more. That was a week ago.

Sis had to take Mom to town for a Dr appointment today, so I asked her to stop by the LBS & pick up my links, since I
don't get to town very often. She called from town, & said the guy at the bike shop said they can't get 'em anymore! WHAT?!!!

Does this make any sense? Has anyone else run into this? I guess I can prolly still order 'em online from one of the bike
parts suppliers we all deal with, but it seems incredulous that I can no longer buy something as common as master links, locally!

So now I get to pay more for shipping than the darn things even cost!

Hmmm... never used one myself, but you are correct, I have not seen one on a bike for a long time.

I think the LBS guy is lying to you. I have at least one on every bike I have built. My LBS carries them seperately and also every new chain I buy has one in the package.:rolleyes4:

Haven't seen 'em there for at least a couple of months, & that's where I've always bought 'em.
In fact, I've been to 2 different WalMarts witthout any luck.

I have at least one on everything I've built as well. That's why I'm trying to get some more! And yeah,
they're still in the package with the chains, but chains at WalMart are overpriced at $10 each!
I get chains considerably cheaper from Niagara, but they don't come with the master links. :(

I got a 2 pack from Nashbar for $2.99. Not worth the shipping if that's all you're getting but I was placing a good size order so I had them add these to it.

Joey, I get mine at the hardware store. Ace has them in their Hilman stuff, you should bring a little chain with you for size. Also for you guys that use the #25 chain...... it's the same chain they use on some electric garage door openers. I find it at the dump or get used chain from the Overhead Door Company when they replace old ones with theirs. Comes with one master link. These chains have never been in the rain or dirt or abused in any way. Most are oiled amply. Lotta links in these babies.
