I bought the Street Fighter plans and my project "Thunderbolt" is under way. I am brand spanking new to bike-building and almost as new to welding. I have taken apart many a bike when I was a kid. I have welded approximately 3 items. So.... I am more familiar with bikes than I am with welding. My welds currently look like a dried up dead worm on the sidewalk that exploded. lol. practice practice practice. I do have 3 questions...
What type of store can I buy the 3/4" axle rod at?
Where can I buy pillow bearings?
I made my first mistake... I bought 24' of 2" instead of 1.5", other than a grinder stand, does any one have any ideas on a simple project that I can practice my welding skills where I can use this steel?

Some of us use The Big Bearing Store, but it seems their prices have gone up significantly since I last ordered...may have to use Graucho's store.

Welcome to the site. Many of us had less welding experience than you when we started so we know it will come to you with practice.:)

Thanks for the help so far guys. I have a couple more questions now.
Is SunStar a good brand Derailer? I have two. One from a Fuji and the other from a Lotus.
How do I take off the rear gears? I see two holes that lead me to believe I am going to need a special tool. I am thinking I might just take it to the bike shop unless you guys have any ideas.
Thanks again!

Check out Brad & Kats' book AZ Bicycle Builders Bonanza. Covers a lot of the essentials for hacking.

Start by building things that have right angles, like a good solid bench, at your working height, a ramp to roll your SF up and down for ease of access/egress, then start getting into different angles and shapes... by then you'll have fitted out your workshop, ready to get into the swing of being a builder!
