Why did you guys not warn me to engage my brain before starting this project ?
or maybe I am doing something wrong.
Anyway just laced a big wheel onto a completed hub/axle and either 20" bikes are not standard, the wheel width really messes with me or I am doing something way wrong.
5.5" wheels with 2" washer hubs welded to the axle at the outside dimension of the wheel result in spokes a good 10mm too long. ugly situation.
gonna have to regroup

When you started the crossed spokes, you went one hole too few, that's all.
I have laced 15 inch car rims using spokes from a 20 inch wheel and a 24 inch wheel, and both sizes work. Haven't tried, but I would bet even 26 inch spokes would be fine.

six empty spaces between the neighbour to the left, I can try again with a wider spacing but I am getting into the nearly 180 degree to each other range now.

just tried it again, went 8 spokes between neighbour to the left, ie: the tenth spoke is the neighboring spoke. better but I still have the entire nipple extending above the rim all the way around when they are threaded on like 3 turns.

Are you using a rim smaller than 15 inches?

I don't think so only set of 14"'s i have ever owned are still on the car.
near as I can measure across the center approximating where the inner bead is

What I see in your photo is exactly right, just keep turning the heads 2 revs at a time. My car wheels look like like that as well when the spokes first go in. As the crossing spokes pull at each other, things will work out...

You could always cross further and skip another hole as well.

It will work out, even if you have to remove the crossed spokes and push them over one hole.
Looking forward to the final product!

I don't think so. I tried to cross one more and I was actually trying to bring them across the hub they were at such an angle.
here is the basic problem. Long spoke is from a kids 20' wheel with 28 spokes. Short spokes I just salvaged were from a kids 20" wheel with 36 spokes.

Gonna give it a shot with the shorter ones which by my estimation are still 20 mm to long
