View Full Version : ready to get to cuttin'
just finished looking over the plans for the Marauder build and can't wait to get started on it. Already been gathering parts and frames, now i have to look for a steel Frame. Don't guess the alum. mongoose frame will work, unless i can figure out a way for the rear triangle to connect up to the frame, any suggestions? Anyways, looks like it's going to be a fun build.

tyThat would be way more than enough.
If you're talking about the original Marauder from the book,
6' of frame tubing will build a bike big enough for a 6' 4" tall rider (by the book),
not counting a few extra inches for the angles & saw cuts, of course.
If you're actually buying your tubing by the foot,
7' would be enough for any size bike.

The smallest stick of 1.5x1.5 tube my metal supplier usually sells is 20 feet. They will cut it in half so I can haul it, but I still have to buy all 20 feet, which is OK, because its usually not the last thing you will build.

The only metal supplier near me will sell any length... but they'll charge a premium on top of the per foot length, plus 20 bucks to cut it. Seriously.
So I buy the 20 foot stick, and bring my own hacksaw.

Dang - $20 for a cut? I bought 4 20 foot sticks of tube and 4 20 foot pieces of 2x2" angle iron for an old beat up trailer I was modifying to haul motorcycles (plus some extra for my steel pile) from International Metals last month and they only charged me $2.50 to cut the entire load in half. Price on the steel was just about 50 cents a pound. It might be worth the drive from Canton for you.

I think additional cuts are a buck each, not sure.
...and yes, you always need more eventually,
so 20' isn't really all that much. :)

Yup, and the first time I ordered it I was green and didn't know any better. I just ordered 10 feet and paid for it all the while thinking "Holy crap steel is expensive". :dunce2:
It's been turned into a CNC shop, and I don't think they like getting their hands dirty anymore.
That is certainly a place I will check out. I even know exactly where it is (graduated from the "North Avenue Trade School" and for a while lived in Smyrna). Thanks Trikeman!

Guys, you should try my local steel shop; it only charges 50c per cut, and I can buy 1m or 10m, mind you the freightage would be considerably more for you guys than me!:cheesy:
