Decided to go with all new cables. Need to be long as you all know. Question is , get a cable already made up and 65 " or get 50ft of cable and houseing and cut to length? Putting the little ends on ??? problem and what tool would be needed there? What do most of you do? I would really like to go with the ready made ones, Pyramid comes to mind, and I think five foot of length is plenty for the longest reaches. Like to know. Inquireing minds need to know????? Thanks fellas. Gonna order today so steer me on the right path. gphil

Gary, I like these: http://www.niagaracycle.com/product_info.php?products_id=10123

They're plenty long enough for any application I've ever encountered
to date, & I've used 'em for derailleur cables as well.

They're cheap, too! :D

I also bought a roll of housing: http://www.niagaracycle.com/product_info.php?products_id=10211

I've used most of it, so my only regret is that I didn't buy 2!

If you want the little ends that you can attach to a plain cable, they're called Knarps. Google it and you should be able to find sources for them. Your LBS may have them also, as well as tandem cables.

For you housings, make sure you get the right kind for shifters, which are different than for brakes. Brake housings are spiral wound, whereas shifter housings run parallel.

To cut both housings and cables, use a cutoff disk in your angle grinder. That will give you the cleanest possible cut. When cutting the housings, have a piece of wire handy to immediately poke into the end of the housing after the cut. this will clear the hole of the semi-melted or softened plastic lining that was heated by the grinder.

Any LBS that sells or services tandems is a good source for cables, but long shifter housing can be expensive for the good stuff. This is the best price I found for high quality (Jagwire) shifter cable housing. It's 25 feet long, so you have enough for a few projects (or some trial and error!):

Head to a motorcycle repair shop and they will set you right up. Throttle cable is perfect, and 10 times less the cost.
