Hi folks!,

Some of you may know me from posts on the Glad forum, and no it is not quite finished yet, but its winter now and i might get back to it soon.

Anyway just waiting for my CC to clear and I should have the plans for the warrior DL'd shortly. i was present and followed along on the original construction thread and have been planning on building this Baby since i first saw it, so i am pretty excited about it.

Now for the question, having never ridden bents before I see there is a lot of interest in adjustable BB's and i have seen a couple cases where people were not able to get clamped adjustable to stay put. I have a simple idea on how to have an adjustable that is mostly clamped but still "indexed" so as it cant go anywhere, and i am wondering on how fine an adjustment is required ? would say 1" steps be enough ( granted the center position would still be made for me though having no practical experience I might get it "wrong" )

So how about it I mean yeah and inch can be a big change ( like pedals you can barely reach compared to ones you cant...) but I mean if it is in the right area is within and inch good enough ?

Thanks

AlsakanDan,

If you were to have a boom with predrilled holes in it, the best support for the BB would be a pair of holes to spread the forces from your legs evenly, so mark out your hole according to the distance your metal brackets will support, eg 1/4"holes in 2" wide steel requires 1/4" material from edge, so that would leave 1" in the middle between centres and then make holes 1/2" along your boom, then you will be easily be able to get the correct setting for every rider

Thanks for the idea's but I dont really want to perforate my boom and I have an idea on what i am going to do ... my concern is how coarse or fine the adjustment should be.... one inch steps seem pretty doable.

Bummer:( still waiting on my plans

1/2" adjustments should be reasonable. 1" is a bit too wide. Racing bikes are made to the 1/32", maybe a bit too fine for the AZ.

Yeah, 1/2" increments would be fine, IMO, although for me,
it's a non-issue, as I've never had a problem with a BB moving.

Perforating the boom is not a problem if you weld a tube into the holes.
Grind them back flush and they look cool, are strong and stop deformation of the boom with excessive clamping tension.

Oh, that means drilling a bigger hole (dia. of the tube), inserting the tube, welding (or brazing), and then grinding it smooth -- I'd had some wild thought about sliding them inside the square tubing and attempting to align them with the smaller holes ... and then welding. Good idea Savarin. But then I haven't had any problem with BB clamp sliding. Using aircraft grade bolts, I can REALLY clamp them down without them breaking off. :)

I dont actually have any adjustable bottom brackets on my machines as I build them to fit just me but I did do this trick to get an adjustable seat on the chopper that had round frame tubes.
It works great and looks pretty good also.

Freth, whats the underseat steering and handling like on your lowrider?
I'm considering this on my next build but am a little unsure regarding handling characteristics.

I really like it!! :sunny: Go to the following address and look at it.

I clamp my arms to my sides and hold it lightly so I don't over-correct. Works great!

Great story Freth!! I've always like the look of that bent, even if it is pink! I bet that just kills the wedgie riders to get passed by a pink bike! LOL!
