Here’s a little jig I made this evening to help me with holding the end caps on while I tacked them. It’s just a bolt that presses onto the end cap to hold it against the end of the tubing, clamped against the side wall.
It gets around the problem of trying to hold it securely with a gloved hand while you strike the arc. Much easier and well worth the 20 minutes or so it took.

Outstanding, Blaxmyth! Thanx for sharing that! That definitely simplifies an otherwise aggravating little chore.
And just in time, too! (For me, anyway) I'm just getting ready to start cutting frame tubing for the DW, & capping the tubes is one of the first steps of the building process.
Thanx a lot! http://www.lucidscience.com/forum/icon_smile_big.gif

excellent, I'm capping my new rocker panels on my jeep tomorrow, this will make life so much easier. Thanks, if you are ever in Canada or I'm in NZ we'll have some beer, my treat.

Hey, this thing works great for welding in headset tubes, too!

Posted - 01/05/2008 : 19:25:02 Thanks, Sir Joey - I hadn't thought of that use and I'm about a day or so away from getting the headset ready to weld onto my Meridian.
Cheers, Phil

Hey Blaxmyth, I liked the jig so much, I made a slightly larger version & used it to hold the entire tail section of the DW in place for welding!

Sorry, PW, but I forgot to get a shot of that particular setup. I'm usually pretty good about shooting everything I do, but I spaced that one...
Maybe I can "stage" the shot before I paint it.
