I have a head tube and fork from a children's bike that I am going to use on the Meridian, and its from a very old bike. After I cut it from the frame, I noticed that it has extra large holes underneath. Can this be filled in with a welder or should I bend some plate over it or something? Also- what type of sanding tool can be used to take off paint and what grit? I have an angle grinder so i'm hoping that will work. Thanks

Personally, I'd hold out for a better headset tube.

For paint removal, I like a twisted wire wheel in an angle grinder. It's pretty aggressive, though. Caution is advised.

Thanks for the advice, I'll seek out another head tube.

Large holes like that are often what is under the tubes on old lugged bicycles. That is why many stay away from them for hacking.
