How about the Krew throwing out some fav DW seat dimensions. I need to get out the 3/4" plywood this week and make a seat. Also any good sources to run out and pick up some of the 1" hard foam talked about in the plans? What are you using to cover the seat with once the foam is glued in place?
Thanks

Click here and scroll down about half way....

You'll see my DW seat made from some plywood, some hi-density kneeling pads from the local garden shop, and some fancy vinyl fabric which I stole from the top of my daughter's toy box. (She's 40 now, so I'm sure she won't miss it...!!).

I hope this helps...

Where can you get that hard foam shown in the plans???

I can go to the AD Carson site (drawing 8 - scroll down the page)
http://www.recycledrecumbent.com/ez1draw.htm
to make an elevated seat out of tubing & mesh ... but I want to build something basic that the grandkids can't tear up too much ...

RR was using hi-density kneeling pads from the local garden shop. If you can't find that, you can use this.

Thanks all, good suggestions. I'll hit the garden shop and check on the kneeling pads first. Once I checked the plans again I came up with some basic lengths and I decided the width would be based on ones own behind size! We want comfort vs the upright unslightly wedgie overhang look!

If none of that works out for you, you can always come over to the mesh seat side, as several of us have done. My plywood and foam seat is now just taking up room in my garage.

Here is another place to buy foam. I just ordered some of thier CD100 foam to replace the foam in a gun case. I'll let you know what kind of quality thier product offers after I get it.

Here are a few from the early stages of the build (before final sanding, seat stitching, and painting etc)

Trikeman, where did you buy your mesh, and do they offer a "heavy duty" version of the mesh you used?

Shipping was painfully slow, but the product was everything I had expected it to be. I am using the foam to reline a gun case. The manufacturer claimed "This firm foam has a density of 1.8 lb/ft3. It is very rigid when thicker than five inches. Available in gray." and it was a very precise explanation. The foam stands up to the weight of the firearms I am storing, even under pressure from the foam on the top of the case creating a tight sandwich effect to prevent the firearms from moving around in the case even if accidentally dropped. I would easily recomend this place as a source for your foam needs, provided you aren't in a rush to get your order shipped.

$12.99 seems to be a good price for Phifertex Fabric ... it's a vinyl-coated polyester mesh with a 75% shade factor. There's a plus version that has a 95% shade factor (it's a tighter weave, a little heavier, and doesn't breathe as well ...).

Here are some sites I found selling the mesh:

Woah - talk about a lat reply. Sorry I didn't see your question before. My mesh is some old sun-screening material my wife used to shade her agility dogs at meets. I guess it is that pfiertex stuff. I think there is a whole thread on where to buy mesh on the old forum.

Army surplus stores should have Army sleeping mats that are made out of good firm foam, I used some on my first spincycle. It's only about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick but you can layer it for more padding.

I make my seats with mesh. Its the same stuff used for pool/patio furniture.
Look in the yellow pages for companies that make awnings as they often have a variety of colours.
My seats are wide so my fat butt dont overflow the sides.
I fold the edges over twice and iron them on the hot setting (when she who must be obeyed is out:D) sandwiched between 2 sheets of oven bake (silicon paper).
This welds the layers of the vinyl coating together so the fibre threads dont poke out.
My last seat was then punched and riveted with brass lace holes. Stainless versions from a ships chandlers would be better but a heap more expensive.
My next seat will be made the same way but without the riveted lace holes.
I will feed a length of aluminium rod down the seam and use nylon ties to hold the cover to the frame. Saw this on a greenspeed and its extremely neat.
The ally rod is bent to conform to the seat shape.

Nice idea using the rod and ties.

You could find the rod method in the link below. Look for seat frame and seat mesh in the column on the left. I used fishing line, but using ties is a great idea.

I bought two pieces, both were 17X12 inches, one was 3 1/2 inches thick and the other was 1 inch thick. The foam plus shipping was under $25, which I thought was a good deal. The piece that was 1 inch thick was too thick for my needs, which was a measuring error on my part, but I did manage to salvage it for another use.

Please take plenty of pics and post a work log here for all to see if you don't mind.
