I'm going to use 24" wheels on the rear end because someone told me I could get lower gearing by using the smaller tire. I didn't even realize it I've got the rims, the pedal assy, and the gearing already. I have a cheapie Mountain Bike from Wally place, its a Storm Chaser or something like that.
I will be building my own hubs just like the instructions however...... since they are 24" already and I plan to take a lot of part anyway. Using 24" tires will the hub still be the same size?? Ok can I just save the spokes and reuse them or will I have to have special ones?
My cheap chop saw burned up after 4 cuts, hey you guys warned me. But being on SS and Disability checks I have to keep a tight budget with cuts anywhere I can make them. I got a 10" miter saw yesterday my Father's Day gift. Also got a couple of cut off blades. Sure hope I can use it on the bike. I needed a Miter saw anyway and its my Father's Day gift to myself.... hey neither of the boys called, and wife worked so I felt sorta ripped off.

Well if you plan on using your old spokes you will need to do some figuring with a spoke calculator.
Just did mine and it was dead on.
Thanks to Richie, Brad , and others.
Don't feel bad that neiko angle grinder I got. Burned through a set of brushes in a week.
Just glad they sent me an extra set.
When I burn through this set I will have to do some searching for new ones.
They don't sell spare parts yet LOL.
Doitbest hardware in town had some I may be able to make work with a little soldering, and slight cutting with my dremel tool. Hope I dont have to do it for a while LOL.

The spoke length isn't all that critical. You can make the distance between the hubs up to 3" without having to buy new spokes. Using the spoke calculators, you'll find that the length doesn't change much when you increse the distance between the flanges. If you use 2 1/2" washers for the flanges, like many of us do, and your original flanges are 2 1/4", It won't matter at all if you increase the flange distance an inch or so. I believe Sir Joey made his with 24" wheels, but I'm not sure on how wide he made them. He hasn't reported any problems, so I guess they worked out OK. Here are some links, including Sheldon Brown's wheelbuilding tutorial:

And from Joey:
Thanx for the kind words, Brad. And thanx for designing such an awesome ride! A challenging build, to be sure, but this thing ROCKS!!! (And I thought the Trixter was fun!)
Thanx, Pagan Wiz! Now, get busy & earn your stripes, so you can graduate, too! :D
Thanx, Kid. Now, if I could just learn to weld worth a crap!
The wheels are 2 identical 24" front wheels from a couple of new Mongoose bikes, purchased just to become donors! I completely disassembled the hubs, removed the hardened inserts & replaced them with a couple of regular flat washers which I drilled out to 3/4" (I used 3/4" axles), then filed the OD to fit inside the cup-shaped flanges. I used my freewheel adaptor to hold them in place on the axle for welding.
My first attempt at building wheels per the plans, was less than spectacular, as I couldn't get my home-made flanges to run true after welding, so I opted for THIS method, instead.
At 2 1/2", the hubs are SLIGHTLY wider than average, & although they're not as strong as the wider ones Brad designed, the 24" wheels I used are already a little stronger than 26s, AND I'm not a real aggressive rider, so for me, this is an acceptable compromise. Additionally, this simplified the wheel building process considerably, & everything is DEAD NUTS TRUE, unlike anything I could've built from scratch myself.
I don't think I would've gone this route if I was using 26s like the plans call for, however...
