I posted to the local freecycle.org site that I was looking for for some free bikes. The first hit was 2 rear suspension bikes. The frame pieces were perfect. Brakes OK, shifters are trashed. So try posting a WANTED on freecycle.org

Freecycle.org is a site that allows people to post items for free.

Now if I could only find a free TIG welder with tanks :)

I submitted my request to join a Freecycle.org group here in my hometown.

They replied back quickly, saying they would like to have me as a member.

They wanted to know more about why I wanted to join their group,
and I had to reply within 24 hours, which I did.

They said they would also reply within 24 hours, whether my request was approved or disapproved.

That was Last Sunday, the 19th. No reply yet.

Today, I sent an appropriate, follow-up to that reply, requesting they reply, to my reply, to their reply !!!!

I think I know how this is going to .....END !!!

Ashame, I was looking forward to a great association with them, and maybe score some freebies.

Ed, I ran into the same thing here when I joined Freecycle. No one was covering the mail at the email address you were supposed to send your response to. Look for one of the administrators e-mail address's and describe what is going on. that is what I did. I got an almost instant response with membership approved.

HI Al

I checked the email my reply went to, and it was to,
owner@yahoogroups.com.

That was 2 hrs ago, so I guess I'm in hold status again

It's been 4 days and still no reply, to my request to join the local group.

The, will reply in 24 (hours), must be a typo, it's actually 24 (days).

I feel something good is coming out of this, so I'll just be patient.

Ed, When I didn't get a response to 3 e-mails to owner@toledofreecycle. I sent on to one of the adm/moderators with a near instant reply with offer of membership.

Al

I went back to the site for the local group and the 'only' reply address is the one I sent my return to.

I searched all through the site to find an address for the moderator and the one I found sent me back to the one I used.

The site shows my request still 'pending', so I 'm putting it on a back burner, and not stressing about it.

Thanks for your concern and tip.

Now back to 'your' website problem.

UPDATE

My 7 day old request, still showing as, 'pending approval by owner'.

Still no reply to my request. Tried sending message to every email address,
with each message, 'undeliverable'.

Can't find a valid point of contact anywhere.

More suggestions anyone?

Thanks, Ed

Finally received a reply and welcome to the group.

I will look for items that I've been hoarding, and offer them, as my first act with the group.

There seems to be only one other person requesting bike parts, so still have a chance at getting something useful.

How cool is this?

As mentioned, just be patient and something good will come!

Within minutes I had an 'Offer' for two kickstands, which I don't use or need at this time.
But it was nice that someone replied to my request.

And within hours on the first day, is pictured the bounty from my first 'pickup' of free bike parts.

Maybe not the best in the world, but it proofs the system is working.

Frame and running gear (not so much the chain) seem to be salvageable, for something, some way, sometime.

http://s16.postimg.org/myhp2dd45/Freecycle_org_Bounty_001.jpg

The scooter I might recondition for that special grandchild.

http://s15.postimg.org/uh9zf51nf/Freecycle_org_Bounty_004.jpg

I was also able to set someone up, with a free portable basketball hoop set up.

So even though it took some time to get started,
the association with Freecycle.org looks to be a good one.

Enjoy, Ed

Ed the head tube and stem are gold mine. I used this for my warrior. I also considered the rear end for the beginnings of a cycle bully or towable trailer. But there are a bunch of uses for the stem and head tube alone. Good find.

Updated my post in the FREECYCLE.org this morning and got this 26" , 21 speed, bike by 1pm.

Also have an offer for 5 other bikes. Just waiting for pickup instructions.

Chrome wheels are in perfect shape. Tires are 'toast'. Overall, everything is in good shape,
for scratches and gouge marks, sometimes found on handlebars, levers, etc.

Anyone know anything about these type shifters. Shimano, ALTUS, ST-C190
Two shifters, with two levers each, and I can't feel any clicks.
Very smooth operating, but nothing moves. Might be , 'broken'?

Enjoy

Pull back the cable housing from the where it enters the adjuster barrel at each shifter and then move the shifter through its throw. If you have cable movement, then most like the cables are stretched, broken, frayed. If they are simply stretched they may be salvaged by simply adjusting them, but they may break in the not too distant future.

If they don't move then the shifting mechanism is broken inside. You can try taking it apart and see if it is a spring that has been thrown, but given that both are not working, I'd bet they simply need to be adjusted.

Hey ! thanks Bill

When the temperature gets down to around 80 ish, I'll have a look at that.

I'm still wondering what the 'two' levers are for, and how that system works.

Ed

Just finished watching Youtube, on the subject, so now I have an idea what's what. Rookie Me !!!

They are thumb shifters. It is hard to see in the pics if they are triggers shifters. If there is another smaller lever in the front, then they are trigger shifters and will be indexed. If there isn't another small lever in the front then they are friction shifters and you move them into the desired "speed" position. One is for the front the other is for the rear.

While you all, were chewing on your, 'fried chicken', on the other thread,
my 'Fire Dragon' and I scarred up 5 more donor bikes from FreeCycle.Org.

Two beach cruisers, and 3 matching 10 speeds
http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/521/3iut.jpg

To this point I have received 7 bikes and 1 scooter. Didn't get the last batch of 5, until I reposted my request.
So if your using FreeCycle.org, keep your 'wanted' active

Enjoy

It's a great resource, especially if you put: BROKEN in your request subject. You'd be surprised at what people with little bicycle mechanical knowledge think is broken. I once got a bike that simply had a twisted chain. After "fixing" it, I decided it was better off being donated to Goodwill for a kid who needed one.

Caught a 'minnow', this morning, and didn't even have my line in the water.
It just shows, that you have to visit the pond often, in case it's been restocked.http://forum.atomiczombie.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have a feeling that right after the December holidays (seems to be the most politically correct way I can account for everybody) would be a good time to put those hooks in the water.... Especially after December 25th...

And the 'freecycle' fairy just dropped 5 more in my yard.
Didn't even have to go get them.

Their rusted pretty bad, freewheels, chains, sprockets, etc.
Wheels/rims and spokes look to be ok.

I have plenty at the moment, but the frame and handlebar material is usable.

There is a similar board in the UK called Freegle (https://ilovefreegle.org/) - I think it might be an offshoot of freecycle. I just got a free bike through that (though it's lugged and brazed and seems to work, so probably won't get chopped up).
Worth checking your local one if in the UK and looking for bikes.
Cheers

Struck GOLD again...well maybe only SILVER

I was headed to my local swap meet this morning, looking for a good deal on tires for the 'BIG WHEEL', for the StreetRunner build.
But upon arrival, I remembered the 'Fair' is in town, and they get to use the parking area, that is normally the swap meet location.

So I headed home and stopped at my LBS, which is just down the road from my place.
They couldn't help me with my tire needs, but I just happen to catch the guy that usually takes their scrap for recycling.
I pleaded my case for needing those parts, that he was just going to give the scrap man anyway.

He was a decent guy and agreed to let me take the whole load. I told him I would have to return with my truck.
I thought it was decent of him to give all his, potential scrap $$$$' to me, so I gave him $20, just for being so agreeable.
I know I came out ahead, just by some of the stuff I got.

The wheel may be bent, but the coaster brake works just fine.

https://s15.postimg.org/jgr6u5nyz/2017-05-28_00.23.03.jpg

Lots of seat clamps, (one can never have too many seat clamps) and cranks to look at closer.

Chains..lots of chain. Maybe not good for those speeding down the road, or jumping, 'over the road',
but will work for my creations, which are created for 'sloth motion'

And then there is this. Yet to be sorted. Looks to be lots of little bits like that axle nut that got misplaced.

Some presorting, before it got to hot standing under the 90 plus degrees.

I think I may have a problem.

Maybe not as bad as some on here, but it could be the beginning of a real addiction.

There's just something about, scoring free stuff, or near free stuff.

I do give away stuff too, so maybe that evens the score.

Maybe I should seek help, before I have to build 'another shed',
not for storage or building anything,.....
but to put my bed in !

In the final sifting through the 'junk', I found a third allen wrench, and four single speed freewheels,
all serviceable, just need cleaning and lubing.

nkemp

I have a similar problem. I see potential in everything ... so I can't throw anything. The problem is that often I end up needing the stuff I collect which only reinforces the problem.

One day while riding the bike I saw a yellow glove on the shoulder. Having a whole set of unmatched left hand gloves (why are so many left hand gloves lost?) I decided to leave it. It was time for a change. A couple miles down the road I found the other yellow glove on the side of the road. $#!+... now I had to ride back to get the first one.

My wife sees it as a problem my kids will have to deal with after I die. I just smile imagining their faces when they open yet another box and exclaim ... "hey look what dad has here!"

BTW ... I hear there are therapy groups/events. They are called swap meets with the focus on the word "swap"

Free Cycle - Another Meaning ?

When one uses Freecycle.org, one expects to 'receive'.

Last night I think, someone misunderstood what Freecycle meant.
Surely they thought I had FREE CYCLES. so they helped themselves to at least four.

https://s2.postimg.org/4fcoxuz3t/freecycle_bikesx5_002.jpg

The 3 Schwinns, and the dark blue cruiser in the front.
I had them stored in the back of my shop, trying to keep them out of sight as much as possible.

I did see a stranger lurking behind my side neighbors house about 3 days ago. He's my prime suspect.
It looks like he/they came in from my rear neighbors rear gate.
No loss, as they were free to me, except for the gas it took to go get them.

It just goes to show how vulnerable we all are at any given moment.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Hopefully that is the most expensive thing they tool. I lost a few tools over the last year from some folks thinking I had a free for all as I went in to the house. My biggest loss was a brand new Lincoln 3350 welding helmet fresh out of the box. Did'n't even get to try it out. Went in house to get some water, got a phone call, and got distracted for a few minutes- came out and a bunch of hand tools and new helmet gone. Its the only think I have not been able to replace yet. Got it for tig welding as it has a very low shade setting for low amp tig welding.
