my quad is coming along nicely, i have the frame welded up front to rear. still have to grind down the welds, but its solid. and i sat on it for the first time today :)
wow... its quite large. about 29 inches by 7 foot 9". i mean, i guess i knew it would be, but it surprised me. its bigger than my couch. and i know, cause they are sitting side by side right now. guess this means it stays in the house until its done and painted. dont want the thing turning into a rust heap.
next on the list is fab a disc brake adapter and freewheel adapter, then on to the steering.
whats the best way to post pics? photobucket?

Click on the link at the bottom and look for "Quad Mod".

and trouble....
measured from the lowest point of the rear boom to the floor, its only 3.5 inches.
all my tubes are the right lenght, and when i mocked up the rear boom to the front boom, i put it at 5 inches. which means my seat post is too long. was
the 16 inch measurement only a guide, then measure and cut what you need later?
anyway, ground clearance is fairly important. will i have enough or should i shorten something?
AtomicZombie
06-21-2008, 03:28 PM
It would seem like you missed the step shown in Figure 84. With the ground clearance set, you use the rear of the frame as a guide to figure out how much needs to be trimmed from the seat tube.
From the sounds of it, you welded the rear directly to the end of the seat tube without trimming it first, making the frame too low to the ground.
No problem! Just cut it off and go back to step 84.
Brad
Sparky
06-22-2008, 12:07 AM
oops :o
i did miss that. it doesnt actually say to cut it tho. just to weld it up.
either way, no problem. that weld was ugly anyway. so, tomorrows plans are made. :)

so, ive had the past 2 days off work. and ive been hard at work...
got the seat, steering, bottom bracket, and brake caliper mounts done. had some issues with the handlebar stem, welded it WAY too close to me, had to cut it off and move it about 5 inches forward. thats what i get for not measuring and mocking up and all that.
and today, not only did the neighbor come over to have a look-see, he came back later and brought a friend. go figure, its not even done and its turning heads.
oh yeah- first ride was today. no chain, so just down the slope in the yard. to test the steering, ya know :D
i think it needs to be blue and silver. those seem like good colors.

i took my first pedal powered ride today. in true zombie style, one speed, no brakes, loose handlebars.....
the chain is too long by a few links, it rubs the seat bottom, the handlebars might be too high, i need seat padding....
but i RODE IT! all the neighborhood kids think its the coolest thing ever. i couldnt agree more. :D
thanks brad, for being such a genius. and of course, others for their help and ideas. next project is a spin cycle, then i cant decide on a marauder, meridian, or delta wolf. well, i guess i wouldnt make a full wolf, id attempt a front end quick change like richie rich. but anyway... i wrangled friday off work so i have a 3 day weekend to finish, test, paint and prepare the new ride. which still needs a name...

You are rocking and rolling I just got steering done on my wolf.
Chain and tommorow if rain holds out.
You are fast.
Took a push ride myself today up to end of street and back.
Except I did the pushing wife did the steering.
She was quite impressed at the way it handled.
You will be riding a fully painted ride b4 I get my chain routing figured out.
Knew I shouldn't have used such a big seat LOL.

06-27-2008, 11:37 AM
i got the wheels from a local bike shop, the stickers on them say ZAC 30 weinmann.
got the tires and handlebars from bikeparts usa.
i dont know if im that fast- the steel for the frame was expensive, and while holding off for the next paycheck, i made all the brackets and cut down the steering necks and all that. so by the time i got the steel, it was almost just bolting all the stuff onto it.
and chain issues have just snagged me also. today im going to hopefully run the cables and make all the shifters work.... hopefully
gotta make another run to the hardware store for more bolts. :)

I feel like a schmuck for saying anything, but I don't want you to get hurt. :o I don't know that you will, but the possibility exists.
Check out the part inside the circle. The tube a) looks small, b) is all by itself, and c) looks kinked or crimped. I know the h-bars don't really take a whole lot of torque, but over time, if any of those conditions exist, the bars may take a jump to the left (or a step to the ri-i-i-ight) and leave you with no steering.
Just a point of note... anyone else seeing this, or is it just me?
TheKid
06-27-2008, 02:02 PM
I didn't notice the crimp, but I also thought the tube holding the head tube seemed small.
AtomicZombie
06-27-2008, 03:36 PM

Add a triangular gusset made of 1/16 sheet under the tube to the frame, and you will be ok.

i think that is mostly reflections and shadows. however, it is small and ever so slightly off. and the seam in the center happened when i welded it on and then realized i didnt have the tube or bearings inside it. :o so i cut it in half, assembled all the bearings, then welded it back on.
its not crimped or bent, simply not welded straight. but i will take yall's advice and put a plate in there. dont mind, it gives me a place to put my logo. :D

Hey sparky, is that finish similar to the lace paint jobs popular in the late 60's-early 70's? Back then, it was considered cool to tape some lace on hoods and trunks mostly, then spray paint with a different color. It was too fruity to me, but a lot of guys liked it on muscle cars.

ive seen pictures of old customs with lace paint. i thought it looked pretty cool. but no, that picture was about a minute in windows paint with the spray can tool.
i got the painted frame assembled this morning, still have to route cables and adjust all that stuff. and i have to do something about the seat. i dont like the cheap particle board that i have on there, so i think i'll get a 1x10 and shape it nice and pretty. gotta get some foam too. and i need back fenders, my elbows are close to the tires.
and thanks for the kind words about my speediness, but it really wasnt that fast. i dont know when i got the plans, but it was sometime in april or may. i didnt follow the directions the way they are laid out, i had alot of stuff done before i ever got the pillow blocks. which is like step 2. ive been working on it most every day, but i only get about 2 hours in before it gets dark, then all day on weekends.
i'll have pictures up tonight, i promise!
oh yeah, they are cheng shin tires. cheapest i could find. i like em cause they have a real square profile. i figure since this thing wont be leaning in the turns, those will be better. also gives it the indy car look

Here's how to make the disc adapter. It's hexoganal like in the DW plans, but it can be made round.
http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z66/edpol_photos/disk%20brake%20template/
You may need a caliper mount for some types of calipers.
http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z66/edpol_photos/caliper%20template/
If you use a 5/8" axle, or want to use the 5/8" freewheel adapter from bikepartsusa.com and drill it out to 3/4", this may help.
