Anyone know what type threads are in a bottom bracket shell in like a standard mountain bike with non sealed bearings.]
Just noticed my bottom bracket got oval'd from the heat I think.
Next time I will put an old set in the threads.
B4 I weld.

So for now I need a new bottom bracket shell.
I think mine is 1.5 Inch around by 68 MM long.
Just confused by what kind of threads.
Typical that the make several english,Italian,French, among others.
Figures That was the only bottom bracket shell I had that was worth using...
good thing is the shells are cheap 4 to 12 bucks.

Don't know about yours, but you may find Sheldon Brown's database to be of some use

I never remove the right cup, and that is enough to keep the shell from warping. I have cut hundreds of BBs from bikes and have yet to see one that was not the standard thread size.

You may be able to fix the shell. Do you have a large vice?

I have a raleigh bottom bracket shell but the bearings and stuff are frozen.
And it does look similiar until you inspect it farther.
Got a couple italian racing bike ones.
And a french one.
Tried to salvage a froze up nishiki bottom bracket but someone had already stripped out the left side...
I will just order one from novacycle they are only $3.57 ..
Ordering 2 and shipping is still 10 bucks..

Tried to round it out in a vise but was no go also.

I went to poweron last night to order some BB shells for the spinners. They're on vacation until the end of the month. I like nova's prices, so I'm ordering a half dozen from them. I could use all I could get, and the only ones I've been finding are the one piece crank type. By ordering a half dozen, I'll be guaranteed to find at least a dozen bikes with 3 pc. cranks. That's always the way. I just ordered a 5" makita grinder the other day, and today I got a flyer in the mail from a commercial tool supplier I bought most of my carpentry tools from. I haven't received a flyer from them for at least eight years. They have 2 Dewalt 5" grinders for a hundred bucks. I paid $85 for the Makita. When it comes, I'm going to refuse delivery.

Guess I need to READ more.
Did not see poweroncycling on vacation till end of month.
Just ordered 2 from there.
Guess I got spares.
Will complete my order at nova now also.
Did order from nova just waiting till monday to call them lol.

Ordered from poweron cause they take paypal and I had money in my paypal account...

Or I may just finish the trike off and wait for the bottom bracket.
by the time I get it done and painted my BB's should be here from poweron.

Thanks PAPA for the poweron link though I love using my paypal money from stuff I sell on ebay....

I am not calling nova now made up my mind I'll just finish bike and wait on BB's....

Heck maybe I will get it done by then weather don't look good for bike building too much rain LMAO

I thought I was going bananas. I could swear poweron was not shipping until the end of the month. So I just went there, and found this:

Welcome to poweroncycling.com
IT'S VACATION TIME AGAIN! WE WILL ATTEND BIKE VIRIGINIA FROM 19 JUNE UNTIL 29 JUNE. WE WILL HAVE A PERSON MANNING THE STORE DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS. HOWEVER!!! OUR SHIPPING DEPARTMENT WILL BE DOWN UNTIL 30 JUNE.

That sure helped my sanity! I still like Nova's prices better. Even their disc caliper mounts are much cheaper, almost half the price. (It's even cheaper to make your own. I made the disc caliper mount for my new fork in less than 10 minutes from a scrap piece of steel.)

If you're not used to their site, it's just some printing at the top of the page. But I've bought stuff from them, and that large, colorful lettering was a shock.

Got my BB shell fixed somewhat, good enough for now.
Just used the bottom bracket cup, tapped it into the shell.
then tightened best I could with wrench.
Then when I could not tighten any more.
I put in in the vice holding the square shoulders.
And used the tube for leverage until it redid the threads, good enough to
get it adjusted, and locked.

Spins freely.

Had to use the vice to squeeze the shell gently to make it as round as I could.

Will work good enough for a test ride.
Or until new shell gets here to make a new one.

A nice rethreading tool can be made by welding a 16 inch rod or tube to a BB cup. Put the BB in the vice and work the threads as if you were using a tap. This usually fixes them.

Did sort of same thing.
Omg a bottom bracket rethreading tool and facing tool is 300 to 400 bucks lol

I also discovered that if you want to shorten aluminum cranks, assuming you're using pedals for a 3 pc. crank, if you drill the hole to 33/64", you could use a similar method to thread them with an old pair of pedals. The hardened steel of the pedals will tap the soft aluminum nicely. It will also work if you drill the holes to 1/2", but it's a lot harder to tap. A 13mm drill may be easier to find, and will work better than the 1/2" drill.
