View Full Version : Assembled Wheel and Spinner

I assembled one wheel and stuck the spinner in place to check the paint scheme. The pic does no justice to the real thing, but gives an idea of the look. The more I do to the wheels, the more I think the Hauler should be a quad.

Oh man, that's incredible, dude! I sooooo wish I hadn't already welded up my hub flanges! That REALLY looks good, especially on those radially-spoked wheels!

Thanks Joey. But I'll tell you what. If I ever find a bike with those 144 spoke wheels, I'm gonna pass!

Good use of the force, master Jedi.

Once you have the visualization of the finished product, the rest is...HARD!

Thanks guys. Now I have to take it apart, because I forgot to do the final sanding with 1500 grit paper, and compound the paint. It makes such a big difference. At least it's laquer, and already cured.

Took it apart, sanded, compounded, and found some spots that need touching up. They're not in real noticeable spots, so I just brushed a bit of paint on, then clear coated. Reassembled, ready for mounting!
Tomorrow the second hub will be finished, and I'll put them on to see how the smaller wheels affect the frame. If all goes well, the frame will be painted by Wednesday or Thursday. Then I can finish the flatbed, but in the meantime, I'll add a rack for carrying stuff.

I can just see the Streetfighter, with those things on all 4 wheels. Talk about SHARP!

So Kid, how 'bout some close-ups of whatever mounting method you finally decided to use on those?

I said it before, and I'll say it again: The more I do to the wheels, the more I think the Hauler should be a quad.
I posted some pics in another thread, albeit, the unfinished product. They show what I did up to the point of fitting the tube that the spinner gets welded to. Once that tube is cut, the second nut gets welded flush with the outside edge, then the spinner is welded to the tube so it threads on the axle. here's what I posted earlier:

Something I'd forgotten. When threading, it was difficult to get the die to start straight, and the threads are at a slight angle. So the tube that gets the spinner nut has to be set straight in the hub, and the nut has to be welded in at the same angle. Otherwise, the spinner tube will thread on a little cockeyed.
I was wondering what went wrong on the first hub, and went on to do the second hub to see if there was a problem there. Instead of marking the tube and cutting it straight, I measured the distance between the flange and the end of the nut, and noticed a difference of almost 1/8". Then it dawned on me that the thread-on hubs I tried out didn't work because it was so difficult to get the threads straight. At that time, I even tried a long bolt for an axle on the idle side, and the factory threads on the bolt were also off.
So I ended up cutting the spinner tube so it went slightly past the nut, and welded the nut to it while it was still threaded on the axle. Problem solved. After welding the second spinner to the tube, it's nice and straight.
Th crooked threads do not affect the wheel alignment, because the hubs are lined up with the keyways. I did, however, grind the inside of the hub so the threads are square, giving full surface contact for the nut that holds the hub in place.
Now I'll have to redo the first spinner. Bummer.

Ah, you love it & you know it! :D

Besides, it builds character, & it's good experience for a young Jedi!

I guess it was. I want to get this on the road as soon as possible, so I'm keeping the 26" wheels for now, and finishing this as a trike.
