If you want to rig up a homemade headlight or two, this seems to be a pretty good price for some at Amazon.

I saw some 72 Led bike lights on ebay recently for about the same price.
Hong Kong shipped is only reason I aint bought a few yet to try them out.

I bought mine from B G Micro (http://www.bgmicro.com/) in Garland, Texas. Had to build the 'system', but I needed something to build anyway!! So far they work great.

A 3W luxeon or cree torch would be a better bet.

I've modified one to run on a dymohub - it's the dogs danglies for night riding.

I get all my leds from Oznium.com. Great people to deal with and tons of stuff at pretty good prices.

It's rather expensive and 4 P4 CREEs would probably give you a run time of around 20 minutes on those batteries.

I am building a Highroller and I'm giving it a central 12V system using 10 NIMH batteries in a linear pack dropped down the post behind the seat. The lighting I'm going to power from this pack is a 5 watt LED headlight housed in a Walmart chrome road light. I removed the 55watt halogen and an MR16, 5 watt LED fit perfectly in the housing. I'm using a 12V trailer tail light, also LED in the rear and I'm going to mount a small flasher on the back of the headrest that usually uses 2 AA batteries but the plan is to wire it into the 12V system eventually using a DC-DC inverter to lower the 12V to 3V. I have a pair of LED automotive roadlights I got new for $12.00 that I'm saving for my trike project next year. They're not as bright as the 5 watt headlamp is but they will be great in a pair on the front of the trike.
The MR16 5 watt lamp was almost $40 with shipping, kind of spendy but it's very nice. The light gives about a 25 degree spread on the beam so I believe it's going to be good for fast riding. I think that a single power source is the better way to go as I see a lot of folks that have very well lit bikes but a dozen batteries to round up and charge. I'll be able to pull into my garage and plug in. In addition, I can also run a GPS or charge my cell phone/mp3 player from the power outlet.

These guys are Australian, & I have met a couple of the techs who live in my town, and they make some very nice bright LED lights, upto 20W from a single LED!

These lights will be the final lights I fit to my F-RQ, cheaper one will be used to set up things, sort out housing styles, allow me to road test at night till I am happy with the final beast.

I followed the recommendations here. Actually bought 6 sets some for me and some for friends. We have been pretty well satisfied with the results. DealExtreme where we got the lights have plenty of others to choose from so look around the site.
These lights are very bright. I have two on the bike and that is overkill. You do need to set them so as not to blind oncoming traffic. I think a bit of a hood would be a good idea.
