View Full Version : Marauder on hills?
Brad,
How would you rate the Marauder on long rides with hills? Some people were talking about signing up next year for 150 mile bike ride. Just wondering how it would do on the hills. Thanks!
Kyle
P.S. Hopefully your weather is better this weekend. Were all waiting for some videos of it in action.

Let me give you two ratings...
1) On short but steep hills like the ones around here, the Marauder smokes any upright for hill climbing. I just move forward in the seat, get into low gear, and spin like mad up a hill. This works if you have that kind of energy to spare. If you have no problem running at full speed for about 1 minute, then you will be a hill eating monster on the Marauder.
2) On long rides where hills run forever, you will get the life sucked out of you unless you are a marathon runner. Although I can kill any spandex clad wedgie rider up a small hill, I am toast on those long hills where you would normally be standing on your pedals for 20 minutes. I would rather walk up those ones!
Of course, I am no athlete by any stretch, and would imagine a fit person would "haul ass" up any hill on a lowracer.
So far the best hill climber I have by far is the StreetFighter. It has such low gearing that it would be no problem towing a car in neutral up a hill with it! Slow, but invincible.

Ok, you're on! I will do a video of me pulling our S10 with the StreetFighter. I hope to get the vidcam out this weekend as I have 4 bikes that need videos.

It's foggy and cold today, but I think I will have the grand event tomorrow afternoon.
Weighing in at 4500 pounds - Chevy S10
Weighing in at 60 pounds - StreetFighter
Can this lean mean quadcycle tow a 4500 pound truck!!?! I think it can! Not only that, I plan on having a long parking lot so I can get into higher gears. Call me crazy, but I estimate I will get up to at least jogging speed when I am pulling the truck.
Place your bets - here are your choices...
1) StreetFighter wins and pulls the truck at least a few hundred feet.
2) StreetFighter fails to move and AZ looks like a dork.
3) StreeetFighter breaks a chain or AE5 unit and fails to pull te truck.
Brad
Ps.. I will be posting the results in the StreetFighter thread.

4) AZ pulls groin muscle & falls out of StreetFighter in agony... :D

Brad,
Make sure to make the video of the Marauder first. If not you might be too tired to ride it after pulling a S10 all over the place.

It only takes about 80-100 pounds of force to start a decent sized car or small pickup rolling on level ground, assuming the tires are properly inflated. I think Brad's biggest problem with be getting enough traction off that one 26" back wheel with so little weight on it to get the truck going in the first place. The second biggest problem will be trying not to get killed by the exploding truck tires, as he tries to inflate them to 200 psi
This chart shows the amount of force needed to keep an upright bicycle going at various speeds on an undefined gradient. If we ignore the gradient (no hill) Brad should be able to do it, since I assume he can pedal a bicycle at at least 20 mph.
http://www.schwalbetires.com/tech_info/rolling_resistance
My guess from the graph is somewhere around 100 pounds combining air and rolling resistance of the 20 mph bicycle.

I think Brad said he's using the Streetfighter to pull the truck. That has 20" wheels

Right you are, and better leverage with that 20" wheel. If the driven wheel starts spinning, he will be wishing he hadn't cut the axle in half lol.

What is he going to do once he gets the truck rolling. I can't imagine trying to stop the truck once it gets rolling. That is unless Kat gets in the truck to apply the brakes.

I think brad will move the truck, but his ae35 unit will fail half way down the 100 ft path, Hmm Nope I think he put that option in because he knows it won't fail cause he put some structural reinforcement on it.
I say option 6
If he moves it 10 feet he will move it the whole distance once that truck gets past the point of initial takeoff it will keep rolling fairly well.
Only Problem I can forsee is that 20 inch wheel just slipping on the pavement, and getting no traction, cause he ain't got enough butt to hold it down.
Now put my 350 pounds in it and it will get plenty of traction.
If he fails to pull it I will attempt to pull my wifes 98 grand prix with my deltawolf.
No ae35 failure here cause I added a piece of angle iron at the end of my bolt.
Therefore both ends of bolt are rock solid in a mount.
Those knobby tires I got on there may have a use after all LMAO.

Option #4A - Truck wins. After losing momentum going up hill, truck/bike roll backwards down hill. Truck weight is no match for puny bike brakes and small tire footprint. Truck rolls into driveway of former Canadian lumberjack and crushes his wife's new car. You can figure out the rest.....

AZ will simply be setting new World's Speed Record for riding a Streetfighter Quad.... IN REVERSE !
(When I grow up I want to either be a Cheerleader or a Publicist..):D
Not sure where the hill came in on Brads challenge. He said he would tow an S10 around a parking lot and I bet he will do it.
Now to the real story.....did you get a video of the Marauder in action???

Still no videos??? Either more rain this past weekend or he blew out his legs pulling the S10.
