View Full Version : Tandem LodeRunner?

Could one extend the main boom and make a tandem load runner? I would think that the front fork and hub bearing would need to be beefier. There's also the issue of extending the drive system. Any other considerations?
This is a great design, btw. I like the increased level of detail in the plans. This should help the "brand new to bike building" folks feel a lot more confident. I was originally thinking of making the Kyoto cruiser, but I like the cargo trike idea better.
Thanks!

I was thinking along the same lines but now I'm going to build a Kyoto and just weld a box on the back.

I already have a tandem LodeRunner in the works. It even has an independant drive system that allows each person to select any gear.
Trying out a few rear suspension ideas first.

Brad,
That's very cool. I also realized that the LodeRunner could be made into a sociable recumbent so that the riders can sit next to each other. A crazy idea I have is to use a joystick/servo to steer the trike. Can't wait to see the tandem LodeRunner, tho :)

Howabout adding two seats on a crossmember just forward of the wheels? Is this asking for load issues? I was told that if I was making a playa cruiser then it had to be sociable instead of tandem, oh well :)

What's the difference between a tandem LodeRunner and a Kyoto Cruiser with a box on the back?
By the way, my Team Dingbot engineer bought the Kyoto Cruiser plans and we're modifying them for a kinetic sculpture. Everyone on the team who's seen the plans is VERY impressed by the level of detail. I'd like to build myself a Load Runner when we're done with the sculpture.

Very cool, thanks.
Kyoto is side by side and Tandem Loderunner will be inline.

You can just build two LodeRunners. make a hitch on the back of one to accept the front fork of the second. Bingo. Articulated in line tandem.
Kettwiesel do it that way. Even had a trike train running with a whole bunch hooked together. You probably can find it on their site.
There was also a US made one but I forget the name. A Canadian couple rode a joined tandem pair around Australia some years back. I had a ride on it. My first time on a bent.

Thanks for the compliment and the answer.
My Engineer plans to post progress notes when we have more stuff going on, but this is OT for the Lode Runner area.

Near the end of this YouTube video (2:58) there's a very spiffy articulated kinetic sculpture. The chassis has been in over 20 races, with new art every year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_EvxALPV2k&feature=related
