I have several 1hp motor that came from table saws , band saws in our shop.
What do ya think of wiring up an ac motor - ac/dc converter - car battery.
In theory this should work... right? I guess I'll let you know this weekend

That would work but you will have no way to throttle the motor. The startup amperage will also probably be fairly high. You might want to look around for an AC PWM controller for an electric scooter. They are MUCH smaller than the AC inverters and will give you full throttle control.

You're right it starts up too fast. I have it on a bike stand hooked up with an extension cord to test the motor. Oh well. I was using only free parts so far. keep on keepin' on

Another idea: You might be able to use one of those ceiling fan speed controls. I don't know if they would be able to take the current but they do a good job of controlling smaller AC motors. I used one on a cheap-o lathe and it worked very well.
