View Full Version : Top Tip: before you fit....

Just might save you an hour or two this one.

When fitting new cotterless cranks, the square drive ones, fit the crank extractor tool as a dry run before you first fit your cranks to your build.

Sometimes the threads are gummed up a bit with powder coat, if they are steel.

The first time you come to remove your newly fitted crank, it is easy then.

If you have not done this before, trying to fit an extractor can be difficult, awkward to see and the thread pitch is fine.

:taz: I will follow this very good advice on my next build.

Good catch Tim!

If I could add to this in a small way (having made the mistake I am about to own up to).... LOL.
Do not buy the cheaper extractor on e-Bay the threads on these are weak and they can strip after a single use.
Pay just a little bit more and get the real-thing (e.g. a Park-Tool CWP-7) which is universal and is made of much sterner stuff than the cheapo's.

Just a thought from a hairy a**** old engineer, when you put the extractor bolt in, rotate it anticlockwise until you feel it notch over the start of the thread then wind it in, it can save lots of frustration and damage
