I have got a good start on a Delta Wolf.

Rear Frame welding done.
Rear wheel building in progress.
Pillow block bearing all installed.I'm on page 32 of the plans, except I've got the bearings bolted on and the axes have been cut, I just have to finish the washers, almost done there.

For the axle washers, I have all 4 of them on a 5/8 bolt with my angle grinder to make them as round as I can get them, I have been spinning it on my drill press while grinding them down to being round. Almost done, they look pretty close to what they need to be. Then I will need to drill all those spoke holes, the drill press should help.

I'm going with a mesh seat option at this time, I picked up some of the Pet-Guard fabric from Walmart for cheap. I am thinking I'll use 3/4 EMT for the frame of the seat.

My welds are getting better, I'm using MIG with CO2/Argon mix, I weld a little Grind a lot, but getting better. I will post a progress pic or two soon, I've got a few already on the camera just need to download them to my PC.

Well you are moving right along. Yes they like pics here.
I need to break down and buy a camera I guess.
Cell phone pics were 20 bucks on moms phone.
I could buy a 29 buck camera LOL.
Looking forward to pics.

I worked on the wheel washers last night,,, they have taken some time, lots of holes to drill. I am very pleased with the directions, everything is laid out very clearly and easy to follow, so far I've hit no snags. Tonight I hope to weld the hub washers to the axles. I thought I would be able to use some spare 26 inch rims I had on hand, but now I've looked at them, I'm going to be buying new ones... I've got a few in mind I've found online. So far the Delta Wolf project has been a fun one. I'm looking forward to the Rolling frame milestone soon.

I have been getting a lot of popping when trying to weld this evening, not sure why that was, the surfaces were pretty clean and plenty of gas,,, not sure why it didn't want to work right after the welds there was brown film on the surface of the metal,,so I think I'm getting the gas cloud during welding ok. I will have to wait a couple of weeks till I get my rim's to work on the rest of the wheels.

Is it just me or a visual annomaly.
It looks to me like the seat tube angle is way relaxed.
Might just be my eyes or the camera angle.

Must be the camera angle, the seat tube angle is within a deg of the plans, I have it propped up so it doesn't wobble on the floor so that might be it. After I get the wheels built up and take a picture of that, I think it will be easier to see that angle better. I also have to make the gusset I've just skipped over it for now, I"m planning on doing that while I'm waiting on the rims to ship in.

Yeah I think because it is on the floor and the angle from the top shooting down makes it look like it is 25 degree angle.
Like I said visual annomaly.

I ordered the "Alex DM24 26" 36h Silver" for my Wolf last week, and they were back ordered till yesterday, sucks having to wait a week for them to even ship. The stats for what I am looking for spoke length are:

ERD = 547mm
Flange hole Circle = 57mm
Flange Spacing = 89mmWhich using two different spoke length calculators puts it needing a 263mm spoke. I think I will still take it to a bike shop and ask them to take the measurements just so I get it right. Does anyone have a good source for stainless steel spokes and don't cost an arm and a leg. Of course I need 72 of them a lot of places sell them in bags of 50 what are they thinking? I would need to buy 100 spokes. Would like to get double butted spokes if I can find some that are not to pricey.

Also undecided about which tire for the back of the wolf, I'm thinking a slick would be nice. I weigh 185lb the bike is going to be approx 50lb for a load, wanted a fast tire any recommendations?

I painted the hubs last night, and was able to find 265mm spokes, my calculations were for 263mm but the guy at the bike shop told me for sure that the 265mm would work because I have a double walled rim, I hope he knows what he is talking about. Either way he said I can take them back if they don't work.

I finally had to tell the bike shop I'm building a cart and not a trike, because he kept trying to sell me this ugly up rite trike they sell, akkkk. :( I really don't want an up rite anything, besides the wolf looks cool, even with ugly welds. I found the problem with my bad welds, the gas line was being crushed behind my welder on the cart, and not letting the gas though while I was welding, not that is fixed there is very little splatter when welding.

Finished the wheels last night, and got them trued, not nearly as hard to get them true as expected. But getting the spokes laced was a pain, had to try to get that right I don't know how many times. The valve hole kept ending up with a cross over it, either on the inside or the outside. But eventually got it right. Finally starting to look like a trike now, with the rear wheels on it, now back to the fun part welding.

I will have to take a few more pictures.

Nice work! How wide are the rims and tires, those things look HUGE! I run 1.3" Schwalbe Marathon Slicks on Sun DW6000 rims, at about 70psi. I'm 195#, and the bike (fully loaded for the day) weighs about 35#. No problems so far.

not only am I jealous I can't spell wirth $&$*&%.

I am on 2 or 3 threads about someones build and reading about evrythng that is coming up in those build. It will around the mid to end part of october before I get any more money to get supplies.

Sept spening money is going to this really nice guy who fixes computers for a living but give 50% of to people social security, welfare or other types of state and federal funding. He told me "Hell it will prob be the only way for you to experience another country or learn stuff without having to go to college. I have to do my best to let you and everyone else experience the world"

a very nice guy the is though yopu have to wait longer which I can understand he does his full price customers first and does the discounted after hours. He had to take parts from the puter my mom gave ne and switch them and replace some other parets into this puter i bought for 15buck at a yard sale. he said if i hadnt have bought that extra puter it would have cost about 295 after discount because he would have had to spend money to buy replacement parts so it only came tp 47.5 basicall just his time.

a really nice guy but I only get very little each month for my bike and all of it will go to this guy.

But if you guys and gals want my Birthday is OCT % I will be 41 and it also means that I will have beaten that damned AIDS one more year for a total of 17 years. So send all the materials and tools and fly over and help me finish the build anbd we will call it even OK?

Hi griffin,
Won't be long now. It's sure looking good. The wheels and tires look great.
You'll have to start thinking about paint colours now!

I have some old mtb tires on mine to set up. I scored a nice new Comp Pool for the front. I'm at a standstill waiting for some parts.

I like the tires at 85psi they should roll pretty good, but they are a bit on the wide side, the rims though are DM24's I think pretty standard double walled and $20 a piece hard to beat, the IRC metro's were also $20 bucks for two and also included the tubes. For color pretty much set on yellow, I know the pink fork looks cute, I've already caught a lot of flack from the room mate about that one, she wants me to make a pink bike for her, not sure I can do that.

I have switched to working on the seat rails while I get the last few parts to finish. The seat is mesh with 3/4 emt for the sides and cross support, I've got the main part bent and will be welding it together tonight. I did manage to score a frame yesterday with a good BB I can use, so that was the last major scrounge part I needed. The rest of the parts, I can really spend some money on, so I'm shopping for deals right now, shifters and derailleurs mostly.

For Birthday's mine is Sept 24th, so I have you beat, also mine is several years before yours. Good luck on materials and tools, I know it does cost some money for this hobby. I've really enjoyed my build so far, what is nice after I finish it, I can start a new one. I've already had a request/order from my life partner/roommate to build her a bike. She also wants a tandem, I'm trying to talk her out of that however. Also on the list is a bike trailer so our Dog, who is 14 years old can ride, she can't run so fast anymore, and I expect the DW will be plenty fast.

I strung a temp seat so I could set the steering height and also to be able to sit on the trike, I am going to wait on sewing the seat till I find out if I have to move the seat supports for the chain. From what I can tell it looks like the Drive path for the chain is clear, but my return won't work with the seat support where it is. I have to get a chain tool this week and also install the rear derailleur when it comes in.

Finished the steering system its nice, I wore the girls out having them pushing me around the yard to test/play with the steering. The trike can really take turns, its a lot of fun, to bad I didn't have more horse power :D, I really wanted the rides to last longer.

I also worked on the BB,
I put to much heat to the BB (bottom bracket) when welding because it warped and made it really hard to screw the hardware into the BB. I think when I find another donor bike I am going to redo that. I'd like to have it to where I can take it apart and put it together at least, right now, I'd have to hammer it apart. But I know my welds are solid at least I had to really torque the thing to get it put together.

I'm wondering when I weld the next BB, should I have hardware in it, to prevent if from warping?

I got a couple of old threaded bits, coated them with antiseize and screwed thwm into the BB shell. After the weld it took a bit of effort to start them out but once out the new ones screwed in with no trouble at all.

DOne that.
Have learned to install an old set of bottom brackets cups in while welding.

They work quite well that way and no warpage.

I am getting closer to that test ride which is good because my room-mates refuse to push me around the yard anymore. Last night I got the free-wheel trued (cut the axle to short had to weld a bit of axle back on) Also installed the big idler wheel in the back. Once I get the rear derailleur mounted and cabled, and piece the chain together the wolf will have self propelled motion, and my room-mates will need to find alternative ways to work out. LOL

Also the 5/8 shaft collars came in so I can start working on the disc brake adapters.

Did you weld any part of the axle that will support weight or force from the transmission?

Brad

ggriffin924
09-03-2008, 01:50 PM
No I only had it about 3/4 inch to short for my liking which was partially covered by my freewheel adapter. So there is no weight for load bearing, but I did not have enough to weld it on the back side of the freewheel adapter, which would mean I could only weld the one side. So I welded a small piece of cut axle onto the end, and ran my dial gauge over it till I got it to spin true. So a good non welded solid piece is under where the set screws where on my adapter, and only the far end that sticks out is the new welded on piece. The only force applied to it will be a torque I think but I'm thinking that its manly cosmetic for me. I don't trust my welding on the axle for weight bearing, if I'd done that, I'd be rebuilding another wheel which would kind of suck.
