I found these lurking in the tools section of my local Wilkinsons.

The red button is a convenient QR/Adjust feature that pushes the matching "rack" for the screw-thread out of the way.

£5.99 ea. So I ventured enough capital for 3 of them as an Xmas gift to me from one of my sons (he can pay me later).

Win-Win I think.

Just bit of a warning with those-They are great tools and all but don't get them too close to where you are welding. The QR button melts due to heat and the clamp becomes useless as it becomes very hard to twist the threaded section. I discovered this by accident when I could not get a part UN-clamped after welding. Had to use angle grind to remove. Just a helpful warning. But other wise I have been using these for a while. Wood working they are super great when clamping a glued joint. Just keep them a foot or two away from any welding to avoid melting issues.

Thanks for the warning Bruce.
I do have other cramps/clamps with no such QR feature too; so I guess one answer may be to mix and match available clamp styles in use and also to ensure the QR button assembly side of the clamp is on the far side of any area to be welded.
