View Full Version : Deraillers?

I don't need no stinking deraillers!
I made most of the changes I wanted to make, except the seat, which will have to wait until the Hauler is done, because I plan on using the same cushions for both. I made it up hills in 5th gear, that I always had to climb in first. First gear is 16.6 gear inches, 5th is 31.4. That's with a 24 tooth chainring going to a 19 tooth cog. I'm going to switch the chainring to 34 teeth, which will give me a gear range that's low enough for the worst hills around here, and a high gear that will get me to 17mph @ 80 RPM. I had it up to 15mph, cranking at more than 100 rpm on level ground, at 50.1 gear inches. I haven't been able to do that since last fall, when I had a previous version at 30+ mph, which was before my condition worsened over the winter. I can't safely go that fast on the streets here, but parks are a different story.
I must say, I'm very happy with the Shimano 8 speed internal gear hub. It shifts smoothly and precisely. I also like the clean chain line, with no need for tensioners. I was going to try a pulley with a tensioner, but the trike rides so well with the mid drive, there's no need to experiment any longer.
What you see behind the seat, is a lock wrapped around what will be an expandable rack. It's simply a small piece of 1 1/4" square tube, inserted into the 1 1/2" frame, and welded on. It's notched to accept two pieces of 1" square tube shaped like a T. It acts as a backrest for the seat, as well as a place to weld the neckrest, and will have two round tubes welded to it. One will be to hold my cane, the other for a fishing rod. On the other end of the T, another T made of 3/4" aluminum square tube with vertical extensions will slide in and out for making it larger or smaller. I'll add a couple of lightweight aluminum cross pieces to give support in the center.
I'm planning on installing the fenders tomorrow, after I pick up narrower front tires. The 20x1.95 hookworms are too wide for the fenders, so I'll use them on another future project in the planning stages.
More pics to follow.

Nice work. You know its been so long since I owned an internally geared hub (3 speed) that I can't even remember what it was like to ride one. That Nexus is a nice system.

Thanks. I was surprised how much more efficient it is without the front derailler, which was on the rear triangle, and the tensioner. I thought I'd get more out of it with 3 chainrings, due to the wider gear range, but it rides much better with just the 8 speeds.
I remember the first 5 speed I had, wishing it was a 10 speed so it would go faster. I was just a kid, so speed was number the one priority. When I converted it to a 10 speed, it was much more efficient, because I really didn't need the lower gears. It's sorta the same thing with the Streetfox, because now I don't need the lower gears at all.
It's almost like when I built the Meridian. That was so much more efficient and lighter than my quad, I had to eliminate the 28 tooth chainring. I switched to a 39-53 crankset, and started in 4th gear. The Meridian BTW, is the best bike I ever rode. Before deciding to build bikes, I tried out all kinds of recumbent bikes and trikes, and none of them satisfied me enough to spend that kind of money. If I didn't break my leg last year, I'd still have the Meridian. But since then, I decided i should stick with trikes and quads. i'm not so sure of my balance anymore.
I have 2 SA 8 speeds I was going to use to build a quad, but I may just go with another smaller tadpole. First gear on those is a 1:1 ratio, which I thought was a little odd, but now I see where it may be a good thing.

Clean as a whistle! Bet that little jewel rides nice too, with that boat seat & rear suspension!

How much did that Nexus hub set you back?

It was found in someone's trash. Two SA 8 speed hubs were also found that way, one with a disc brake. I also have a few 3 speeds that I want to convert to mid drives to use instead of front deraillers. Kinda like they use on trikes.

Found in the trash? - Now you are gonna make us all hate you!

Nice finds.

Occasionally, I get lucky. And I'm lucky enough to have friends who are on the lookout for me. In a way, one of the SA hubs did cost me some time. In return I fixed a computer so my buddy could sell it. The other hubs I found myself. The other SA hub was off a bike that looked like it was run over, and the Shimano looked like it was installed by someone who got frustrated and threw the bike out. The wheel wasn't laced right, and the cable installation was all wrong. It wouldn't shift at all. I got the instructions for the proper installation from a guy in another forum, relaced the wheel, and it works just fine.
I'll have some pics of the rack and the tube for my cane later today. The adjustable idea is out the window, because there's no reason to do it other than "because I can".

some guys get all the breaks - my left leg in three places-twice, my right leg, right wrist, left wrist, 2 ribs, and 4 fingers.

Ain't that the truth? Those aren't the kind of breaks I want, though, LOL!

I've been lucky in that respect, though. Only 2, so far. Broke the bone in the side of my right hand,
& had a compression fracture of the spine (OUCH).

My spine is a different story altogether. It ain't broke, but it ain't fixed, either.
