John's was on the "other side" of the trike and that may have made things even worse.
I have looked at all my spare/leftover sprockets and I know that I can reverse them with a little bit of work if I have to (the plates are keyed to only fit one way round), so I am going to stay as is for the moment and see how well (or not) it works.
If it throws the chain, or the chain is seen to be climbing off the sprocket then I will make the adaptation, its not a terribly hard job.
