Is there any "standard" way of filling the hole left in the bottom bracket after removal of the wheel stays and down tube? I've tried filling with welding but I'm either not a good enough welder or this just won't work. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve |

Practice, practice, practice. You will get better with welding them closed.

Oh, yes, when you do protect the threads (if you have them).

I usually weld in a washer, then fill the washer hole, at least for the bigger holes. It just makes for a smaller hole to fill. And as Phil says, protect your threads!

Thanks very much guys :-)
It's the first time I've welded so as you say Jim, i will be doing plenty of practising. Steve |

Another way is to take a piece of tubing that slides over the BB. If a near fit it can be slit to fit. Slide it on, weld round the ends and weld the slit if you made one. I usually do this with brazing but electric should work as well. Another trick I've used is to find a bit of rod to fit the hole. Better if it is a bit oversize and you can grind a slight taper. Grind the inner end to a hollow curve. You don't really need to do that. Cut off a slice a bit thicker than you need. Plug the hole, weld it in and grind down.

Funny thing is I have this above my name on my name tag at work (and it still confuses people...LOL!): Goode, Phil, PhD.

svacher...Like many others, I tack a washer in the hole and then fill it closed with weld and grind smooth. Works great.

Thanks for all of the feedback help guys, while doing some further research i found Sparkys thread on the "the perfect bb" i remembered one of my donor bike had rear suspension and to my great joy it too had the "perfect bb"
I managed easily to fill the tiny holes in this bb and it's now fitted to the frame ;-) Steve |
