Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Yes, you're right, I see what your mean. Inside welds again would be a problem though, as gun angle would make it near impossible to see. So one gusset would only be partially welded on the inside. But better than no gusset. Mind you if I was using box selection cut to form a gusset that would...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi All, I spent today fabricating some gussets and mounting them. Made out of 3mm plate, I have welding then fore of the boom only. The angles are extremely difficult to get the MIG gun head in place and still be able to see what you are doing. That and it has been a while since I did and...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, Thank you for the replies, which do help to fill me with confidence. Any other ideas would be great before I get the welding gloves out at the weekend. One thing that occurs to me is that the Fox plans called for a boom made up of two parts. This allows you to have the angled boom...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, I followed the plans when I originally built my Fox. Anyway, some other gusset ideas. I still have some of the square tubing left. Might be simpler to fabricate. Thanks

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, So I have stripped the Fox down and boxed up the parts. Out with the angle grinder and a wire wheel to strip paint and expose the extent of the metal tear. As suspected it is the thin wall of the box section steel that has failed, where it meets the thicker weld metal of the joint...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, Thanks again for all your input. I have spent some time playing about in Sketchup. Based on right angle steel (green) and flat plate (blue) I've come up with two gussets, which will sandwich the main boom. I am thinking this should be fairly straight forward to make. The welding on...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, Wow, thank you for such fast responses and great advice. I shall try to answer all the questions and queries. I dug into my files for my Fox build to see if there were any clues there. Being my first time welding and doing a project like this I did try to follow the plans as closely...

Oh no ... not again ... Street Fox fail

Hi Folks, It's been while since I posted anything on here (although I have been a visitor in the background) and now I'm back asking questions. So my apologies for that. But I just completed my weekly once over on the Fox and have discovered that the main body to boom joint has failed again 😕...

    Missing blog

Hi, I confess to being absent from the AZ site for a while, but have not lost the interest of all things AZ. Logged in today and was looking at the new site (great job!) and was then looking for my blog posts from my Fox build. I'm a Scout Leader in my spare time and wanted to show the scouts...

Street fox - tadpole death wobble.

In the videos adding the rubber washers did solve the shimmy, but they do perish so you need spares. I tried thicker, more dense washers, but they had less damping effect. You need the sponginess of the washer to damp the shimmy but that comes at a cost, washer longevity. I think the real the...
